Great to hear yourve been through the opp, and now on the mend JJ, i could imagine coughing is a nightmare, I've had broken ribs, a cough a sneeze and laughing are to be avoided. A mate of mine had a quad bypass, he was back on his bike 4 months later.

Re: Well That Was a Surprise...
Quick update, and I’d like to hear an update from Dave also. I’m now ten days since surgery and have been home a week tomorrow (Tuesday). I’m getting around well and feel like the recovery is going very well. My pain is fairly minor. The biggest issue is simply sitting in a chair most of the day watching TV. I am walking a few times a day. I have zero problem going up and down stairs, but I’m sworn to my wife not to do so if she is not home watching me.
I have my first follow up with the Surgeon this Wednesday and a follow up with my Cariologist in two weeks. I’m sure they will give me a better timeline then as to when I can do what.

Re: Well That Was a Surprise...
G'day jjsc6,
Glad to hear you're on the mend....... just promise us you won't overdo things
.
Your heart's electrical circuit has had major disruption so you must go easy and let it settle down. The Cardio people should give you some guidelines to follow, but basically all you can do is walking exercise. It will be weeks before you can try anything like house work or shopping etc....... the prize for trying too hard (overdoing anything) is a setback to your progress.
Also, those medications you have might start to react in a few weeks and may need to be adjusted or changed (I fainted in the hospital outpatients - caused a stir..... and the docs changed a couple of tablets). So you just can't predict how well you are going to be for at least a couple of months.
I am still mending at 5 months, yet another guy I know who was a smoker and a sedentary unfit type, had more bypass's than me and is already back at work after only 3 months recovery..
for me, but
for him ....
.
So sit back and milk that "invalid" status as much as possible.......
If you don't get any guide books or info at your review, I'll try and upload some scans of my stuff...

Thanks Dave. We are on the same page. The Doctors and hospital did tell me the do’s and dont’s and sent me home with a package telling me all that. Trust me when I tell you I don’t want to overdo it. Fortunately I think I’m old enough to actually take advice.
Thanks for your heartfelt advice. You and I now belong to two of the same clubs. One we want to belong to and one we don’t.

Re: Well That Was a Surprise...
I had my follow up with the surgeon today. He said I can drive at six weeks. So I finally got the courage to ask him how soon I can ride. His answer....six weeks! And I’m almost two weeks into it already.
I actually plan to start riding a little more gradually. And I want to be sure I’m off pains meds completely. But as it is I’m only taking about 25% of the pain meds I’m allowed right now. I feel sure I’ll be off them completely in the next week at most. I will probably wait an extra month to ride as that gets me into better weather also. Right now the normal high here in Houston is 94 F with humidity nearly as high.

Re: Well That Was a Surprise...
Hi JJ,
Good to hear you are on track for the recovery I thought I'd have.....
Also, good thinking to delay bike riding for longer than car driving as the breast bones will only be partly healed/bonded by 3 months....... and you wouldn't want to test them with a prang or a slip/slide on the bike... at least they will be prob 80-90% by 3 months but they will take a few more months to regain full bonding strength (that's why you shouldn't lift anything more than your tooth brush in the early weeks....... don't want those bones clicking/grating/dislodging before they grow together eh.....
).
I just had an echo cardio (ultrasound) check today...... to make sure I haven't lost any bits
, but the Doc's will need that before they knock me out and test fire the pacemaker/defibrillator next week. I guess they need to know it will work correctly, but I'd just like to stay out of hospital......
Best wishes........ now back to my TV coverage (all channels breaking news) of leadership challenges for the top job in our house of fools in the National Capital........
- or maybe I'll just go and look at my 1290GT
........ groannnn

“DaveNZ”. I will continue to post milestones on this this thread. It’s very interesting to read this thread from the beginning and may give insight to others who have to go through such medical issues.
Latest news is that I’m going to sign my retirement offer today. I officially work through December 31. It makes the recovery a lot less stressful. While I’ve had a good career that has allowed me to enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle, I am ready to put the corporate world in my rear view mirror.

Re: Well That Was a Surprise...
Congrats on 'pulling the pin'
I'm basically 'retired'....again....... my career ended with involuntary redundancy some years back and after a while I fell into a casual driving job to keep occupied and earn some petrol money....... that has slipped away with my stubbornly slow recovery from surgery etc...... no great loss...... I didn't depend on it as I have a good SMSF and I don't miss our city traffic (often gridlocked due to simple crashes and lack of investment in infrastructure).
Our leading elites have at last snatched a defeat from the jaws of victory and we now have yet another president (oops, I mean't Prime Minister
) and a fresh "new" team of the same old faces (or should that be faeces
). Same old story (politics)...... greed..... self indulgence...... porkies......
Anyway...... here's to doing more long trips on my GT........ hell, a short trip would be fantastic tooo
Best wishes from the land downunder

....... but it was only day surgery this time
.
Anyhooo, feelin ok, so off to the garage to play with my new 'EVO' rack from the battleship parts manufacturer (SW Motech) - half finished the job on wednesday....... looking to mount and check all unstressed and level before tensioning and photo shoot....
....... one of those surgical care nurses would have been great to have draped over the GT.......but I'm dreaming again....
.......
Must be getting close to gaining my wings again....... expecting to be adding to the road congestion by Oct1
Cheers all...... spring has sprung down under

Must be all those cold front weather systems blowing across the ditch........
. We just had some long overdue steady rain showers - breaking the winter drought - so we might green up a bit.
I'm due to see my Cardio Doc on 18 Sept......... sooooo, I'll be asking for my freedom - hopefully he will give me the legal authority to resume my on road activities ...
My GT now has the ultimate high performance accessory which must be road tested asap...................
It is CNC alloy and cost all of $9.00Aus including e-parcel postage from Ali Express
I was keen on the allen-star key KTM oil filler plug but it was $54 from the dealer. As I couldn't drive/ride down to collect it (had to be ordered in)..... I went on line and had similar delivered....... can't believe how cheap it was, and then there were discounts and a coupon to apply... thought I might get it for free
.
It fits and looks great - needs a 19mm ring/open end spanner, so it adds a little more security to the engine on trips away.
