Adding preload adjustment to standard forks

Post by arg » Tue Jan 01, 2019 6:32 pm

Just added adjustable preload adjusters to my forks and fairly easy to do. If you cock this up, could be fairly terminal, so if you are not confident what you're doing, don't.

Buy fork tops for a 1290 Adventure R, £120 new.

Buy some steel tubing, I brought Length: 300mm of stainless Size: 32mm OD 2mm Wall 28mm ID BF from ebay and some steel washers to go either end of the spacer tube, Size (Metric) - Interior: 26mm Exterior: 37mm, thickness 0.5mm.

Took the tops off the forks, removed the plastic guides, took them to a machine shop and got them modified so there is a flat land above the original that one of the new washers can sit on. Cost £10.

Then I made up 125mm spacer tubes and put the whole lot together.
