General failure on cold starting

Post by Mickwatson » Sat Nov 17, 2018 7:18 pm

When cold starting it throws up general failure and engine warning light, switch off then restart a couple of times and all ok, wtf is going on, have stopped ridding the bike due to this, and am now considering selling it.

perhaps a little hasty? Maybe it's something easy, like loose battery terminals. Why not make an effort to figure it out before abandoning the bike?

I've fitted a new lithium Ion battery fully charged, but when starting engine turns over a couple of times then sometimes fires up, then after a couple of minutes shows general failure, switch off and restart and all ok, if it doesn't start then I have to put the battery on charge and try again later, I've only done 70 miles on it in the last 4 months due to this, that's why I want to get something else.

G'day mick,

What does the KTM dealership technician reckon it would be? They must have an idea by now of what other faults will cause the 'general' failure warning - or they can plug in and diagnose the fault if there is nothing obviously wrong with the usual culprits like connections, wiring loom etc.

You won't get much trade in on a bike that won't run...... and you are just passing on the issue to an unsuspecting buyer and adding to the illusion that KTM's are a risky bike to own...... all the newer high tech bikes can have issues..... just need to think back to what was done (or not done) when the problem started and that might give a clue (eg was there a tyre change..... maybe a sensor/wire was pinched.... or has the fuel pump & filter been replaced under the recall...... or was anything disturbed while fitting accessories etc etc ).

That reminds me..... when I go in to get my fuel pump and BREMBO brake piston recall done.... they also will do an inspection of 'the fuse box'....... whatever that means....... maybe you have a corroded fuse connection, or poor contact or whatever KTM has in mind that needs an inspection.....

Bit of a sherlock holmes adventure but it might help narrow the source of the fault warning.

Best wishes from the otherside ;)

Ps if you have a multimeter (voltmeter or whatever you call them).... the only way to test if your battery is knackered is to park the bike overnight.... (ie no battery charger)... then if you have a volt readout on the dash/connect the voltmeter to the battery terminals and start the bike....... if the reading for this "cold start" (nothing to do with the air temp) is below 9.5v while starting, then the battery is stuffed - especially if it is 3+yrs old.

Well I took the bike in to have the recall on the brake done, and asked them if they could plug it in and see what's causing the general failure, they said they cleared the faults, but could not tell me what caused them, checked my battery was okay and said that they could do no more. Very helpful.
Not to sure where to go from here, oh and when started the next day general failure and engine warning light.
If the dealer's can't even figure it out, no choice but to get rid, as there's no backup.
I've owned quite a few other bikes, and sure they've had problems, but I've always been able to get them sorted, dealer just said they don't know what's wrong.

Hi Mick,

Just heading to the GT forum and spotted your post........ sorry to hear your local dealer isn't able to sort the issue.

Is there another dealer within a reasonable range for you...... maybe a phone call to a well known dealership might help steer your local in the right direction...... failing that, maybe contact KTM direct and ask/report/lodge complaint, and see if that stirs up some action ;)

Best wishes for a fast +ve result :)

I had same issue, it was due to the battery. Try another battery, or maybe the bike don’t like your brand off lithium.

Battery would've been my first pick. I had nothing but dramas with LiFePO4 batteries in my Speed Triple. Went back to lead-acid and issues disappeared. The lithium certainly don't like the cold and I wouldn't have thought the UK would be warm at this time of year.

Have gone back to a standard battery now, bike starts ok, but engine warning light comes on after 5 minutes running, if I switch off then restart it's ok, sometimes I have to do this 2 or3 time's before riding, by which time start to wonder if it's worth bothering, so very rarely ride it now.
I just want a bike I can just start and ride.

Could you not get it to a dealer for a code error check. May be something daft like a sensor failing.

Cheers Mick....... I was just reading a post over on the KTM Forum, and you might benefit from his suggestion.

He had a problem in his first two weeks...... which was resolved by checking the battery leads at 'both ends'.

This inspired me to have a look at my GT even though it doesn't have any issues..... and I found the -ve lead was not as tight as I expected and might vibrate loose over time..... this termination is under the RHS tank mount on the SDGT, so I assume it would be same for the 'R'......... (sorry, file won't upload here so sneak over to the GT section in Technical Discussion.....).

Hoping something so simple might be the fix.... :)

Aha.... now it works....

Bike now starting fine, but general failure and engine warning light comes on after 5 minutes running, I have to switch it off 2 or 3 times or until it's fully warmed up, then it's ok, thinking of buying a fault code reader and checking it myself, as my dealer said they don't know why it's coming on.
