SW Motech EVO Side Rack & Rear Seat Rack-plate

Post by Aussie Dave » Sat Aug 25, 2018 12:01 am

G'day from Australia ;)

Sitting around yesterday.... had another look at these items (I was interested in them when I bought my GT in Feb017 - but didn't like the price or the waiting time....and went with KTM cases sight unseen  .).

Visited the Aus agent (Motorrad Garage) and..... behold..... they were on a 20% discount, and in stock :o .

So I purchased both as I had been thinking (again  ) about using my Givi E41 cases, and converting the GT to 'Solo Registration'....... thus saving most of the seat rack purchase cost each year :D .

Motorrad advised there was a new version of the EVO side rack coming out at the normal price ($440Au from memory) but I was happy with the old style item and immediate despatch ex stock Sydney (price $350).

The seat plate rack had complaints for not fitting on with the KTM cases (there is a warning on the SWM site) but as I'm converting to the EVO rack this shouldn't be a problem (price now $207Au vs $267).

I found the KTM cases to be good if packed carefully, but really only ok for solo luggage (30 Ltr ea), whereas my Givi E41's are 40 Ltr ea, not complex in shape, much easier to attach/pack, and have an access hatch (no need to fully open the lid if you need to grab/store something on tour) :). Weight penalty is 5kg ea Givi vs 3kg ea Shad KTM, and 5kg for the Evo Rack.... not an issue for me..... ;)

So the new gear is due next Tuesday and I intend to take a composite pic showing KTM vs Givi as I install one side at a time..... my Givi's should be approx 103cm wiiide...... I forget the width of the KTM Shads (think it was approx 90cm).

That's not too bad for an extra 10 Ltr's capacity and ease of use.....

I'll post the pics if the rack arrives as promised (gotta go in to the big hospital for a 'test and tune' next Thursday  ).

Cheers all....... (geez that turned out to be a life story..... )

Temp Updates until I have real pics to display........... ;)

Items arrived today ( :) ) and I have installed the seat rack ........ I wouldn't bust my guts to buy one unless you intend to carry extra camping gear etc (no pillion passenger ;) ) or you have access to discount vehicle registration charges for rider only........ it's a little disappointing in fit and doesn't increase under seat space or keep the rain out ..... but it was my  plan to convert to cheaper solo rego (and avoid angry polite ossifers arguing about unmodified seats etc etc ;) ).

The EVO side rack looks strong and neat and features quick removal 1/4 turn screws for clean/sporty looks when not hauling cases...... I'll have a go at mounting it but I don't want to overdo anything before my date with the Doctor on Thurs... ..... so maybe it's a task best left for the weekend...... :)

31-8-018 Apologies to anybody waiting for pics...... got one side attached but felt unwell and stopped ( :x , that's life for heart bypass recovery patients...... :( ), so it looks & feels very solid but I've just had a procedure to remove an obsoleted 'loop recorder' device so I must "take it easy" until the general anesthetic (wow got the spelling right 1st go  ) wears off, and the small wound heals......... PITA

Right-EO....... or should I say..... Right-EVO.......

Fitted the seat rack last wednesday........ probably not worth the cost unless you have access to reduced registration fees for rider only m/cycle....... and it isn't weather tight either...... but it looks tuff

Bugger.. I selected the blurry pic.... ..... but can see the 1/4 turn quick release fasteners.

Now for the heavy haulers must have item - the SW Motech EVO side rack.........

It fitted easily, is well made, weighs approx 5kg and is 47cm at widest point (then add width of whatever case you want to run). My old style Givi E41 cases are 28cm deep so I knew the whole rig would be under 104cm wiiide vs the oem KTM Shad 30Ltr cases at 92cm......... so 6cm each side wider for my setup... ok for touring!

I'm happy to report the quality is top notch, the price is hefty (unless you get a sale special) but if you didn't buy the oem cases this allows a choice of any brand/style side case to suit your needs (attachment kits avail). Newer style side plates are due soon....... so expect some discounting for the old style (like mine).

Adds a bit of weight to the back, but if you want to carry enough gear for two, or travel for a month......

Also, I wanted to run my ancient rounded old style Givi 40Ltr cases because they are robust, water tight, easily accept a standard carry bag, hold lots of gear annnnnd.......... they have these......

So I'm all set for for some long haul trips, but can quickly detach the hoops and look trim & sporty.
