2016 SDR stored off battery now throwing check engine light

Post by Shinobi13 » Tue Jun 19, 2018 11:28 pm

All,

Help!! I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a used 2016 SDR with 1620 miles that's been in storage for 8 months with the battery disconnected. The current owner is an older gentleman and very OCD and changed the oil, filled the tank with fresh gas, and reconnected the battery today. The SDR fired up but had a check engine light. The current owner is about 200 miles away from the nearest KTM dealer, so the codes can't be read or cleared. Is the check engine light/ code an artifact of having no power for so long and will the bike go into limp mode on the 200 mile ride back to my residence? If I purchase this bike, will it only need the codes cleared to be back to perfect?

Again, help!!??😁

Thanks!!

Lee

Hey Lee- It doesn't help or anything, but I'm in Santa Fe. Do you have any more info regarding the "check engine " light? I've had mine a few years now, and I don't recall seeing that particular warning. Was it the little yellow triangle with an exclamation point? That could be anything from low fuel to the "time for service" warning, which you can get rid of easily. That last one would be my first guess.
Good luck,
Michael

I'm not near the bike as it's still with the current owner in Ruidoso. Everything else with it is perfect... bone stock, unmolested, incredibly low miles, awesome price. I'm willing to trailer it back but I'm just worried that I may be buying into an issue that may require more than the $60 to clear a code... don't want to have to purchase a new ECU...😳

When the PO reattached the battery, he entered in the current date which was over 12 months from his original in service date, so it pushed a service needed triangle. I rode it home almost 200 miles today with no issue and have an appointment with my KTM dealer to clear the code.

Damn this bike is fun!!!👍🏻👍🏻😆

you can clear that warning yourself. With the key off, press the up and down arrows at the same time, keep them pressed and turn on the ignition. Keep them pressed until the computer cycles through a bunch of stuff. When it stops, one of the settings displayed will be your service date/mileage. You can adjust it with the arrows.

I was told (by a service tech recently returning from KTM school) that the only way to clear an engine check light is to reflash the ECU. That's what had to be done on my bike. I had been to two different dealers and talked to three different techs and none knew of the previously mentioned hack that didn't use the reflash. He also said that engine check lights can be caused by a number of otherwise benign mistakes, such as one turning on the "heated grips" function when you don't have heated grips.

Looks like it turned out to NOT be the engine check light and was just the "general warning" light. The later can be sorted by the end user.

A few days after I took delivery of this beast, I scheduled up the Brembo recall work at my local dealership and they cleared the warning light at no charge.

This thing is an incredible piece of engineering!! I have started the mods with the SAS and charcoal canister deletion, cat removal with an addition of a Remus mid-pipe, and more stuff coming in the mail.

It's so good to be back on a KTM!!

Thanks for this tip.
I just cleared my service warning light doing the above method on my 2014. :ugeek:
