SMT: starting problems & where’s the starter relay?

Here be mechanigeeks. Anything technical that is not a teething problem.

SMT: starting problems & where’s the starter relay?

Post by ted_rw » Thu Jan 11, 2018 6:16 pm

Hello all -

I’ve had the slow-cranking-then-otherwise-healthy-battery-dies issue with my SMT, that a few other folk have commented on elsewhere.

Basically the last battery lasted about 2k miles and it’s knackered. I suspect there’s an electrical/ECU issue behind this but I’d like to check over all earthing points, especially for the starter relay.

Only trouble is... I don’t know which one that is (and it’s easier in this cold weather to type this in the warm kitchen rather than crawl around on the garage floor with a torch...

Thanks for any pointers to the problem or the relay!

Ted

Sounds like a reg/rec issue to me. Can you check the voltage on it?

Good evening halfhide...

The voltage on the battery pops up to >=14.5V on starting then idle, so I’m assuming that the reg/rec is okay.

The battery (no 2, non-OEM, Motobatt) has a much lower CCA than the Yuasa YTZ14S, something like 160 cf 230.

I remember reading somewhere that there has been a suspected ECU issue where the initial state is faulty and leads to some malevolent sourcery on starting but can be cleared by the ignition cycling pre-start. However I can’t really match this against the behaviour of the battery.

I bought the bike from new in Jersey, which is a tad salty, being small, and had a few corrosion issues sorted under warranty. This is why I thought I’d check out the earthing of all starter-related circuits. But as I can’t find a service manual that means a load of continuity checking...

Okay, I finally ventured into the freezing wasteland of the garage and located the starter solenoid, checked the earth connections etc - still slow cranking.

So in went a Yuasa YTZ14S and it started instantly. Still looks a bit suspicious though, as this is battery no. 3 on a four year old bike with <8K miles...
