1290 Superduke or 1190 Adventure

Post by Johnny Mac » Sat Nov 05, 2016 8:47 pm

OK guys n gals, after getting rid of the SMT 990 last year and having a brief dance with an old flame - an RSV1000R I'm ready to take a jump into the orange camp again.

However I am torn between a used version of:

1290 Superduke
or
1190 Adventure

Now I have test ridden both and the SD1290 left me a little underwhelmed while I loved the feel of the 1190. Looks wise tho the 1290 wins hands down.

The use case:
I will not be commuting on the bike
Odd weekend blast, occasional overnight trip with some friends
1 Euro trip for sure - Mossell direction
I'm a big fucker 6ft and 16.5 stone
Other bikes in our group ZZR14, S10000RR, Bi Bang R1, Z1000SX, K5 Gixxer
Even the SMT had no trouble hustling with these lads and was the weapon of choice on the last Euro Trip

I just can't see myself sneaking down to the garage to have a sneaky look at an 1190 like I know I would with the 1290.

Any help or advice appreciated

That's the auld SMT front and centre on the last trip

I was having similar thoughts 2yrs back and I made my mind up by thinking how would I use the bike, what type of riding will I be doing on it.

I bought the 1190 Adventure because I like trailing about at 40mph most of the time on single track roads with grass up the middle. I've never looked back. The 1190 does that perfectly, but also wheelies for England, is comfy, and for a big adventure bike, handles pretty well. There is not much that could embarrass me on that bike unless flat out is your thing, even then, I've seen 152mph displayed on the clocks.

Oh, and with regards to your comment about nipping into the garage to look at it, the beauty of the 1190 grows on you.

Cheers for the response.

Funny enough I did discover on the test ride that the tyre life of the front could be extended

We had the 1190 and SD1290 head to head into decent speed and the 1190 was pulling it back in top. There's just no aerodynamics on the SD and all that power is put to fighting the wind.

In real world performance I don't think the SD trumps the 1190 by much other than some shove out of the corners. That being said, even the SMT was able to embarrass the litre bikes. Maybe the added weight of the 1190, you might lose that flickability?

It's definitely harder work to swap direction on the 1190 than the SMT (I had an SMT also) but you only notice it when you're really pushing on hard. I still wouldn't go back to an SMT now though, I've been spoilt with the 1190.

I can't compare to the 1290SD as after having the dealer lend me a 1290SA for a day and putting 400 miles on it, they won't lend me anything bigger than a 690 now lol. I don't think I'd want an SD anyway, or SDGT, the novelty would be there but once that's worn off, I couldn't see me enjoying doing 2, 200 miles on one round the highlands of Scotland in 5 days.

It all depends on what you do. If I were a couple of hours on a sunny Sunday type of guy, I'd probably have chosen the SD. If I sent most of my time on a main road touring, I may have gone for the SDGT, but I'm not and I don't, I'm on the bike at every opportunity doing as many miles as possible and in no rush to do them and the roads I ride are hard top but normally don't have colours, numbers and they share the same name, unclassified lol. That's what made me go for the 1190 Adventure.

Have you considered the GT version of the SD?

Visordown have a good review and correlates to my feelings.

The 1190 feels like good old fashioned power delivery and the 1290SDR just doesn't, even with all the electrickery switched off.

You ask for 80% throttle and it gives you what it thinks you should get.

The 1290GT is not in the running for me as it neither has the looks of the 1290 SDR nor the practicality of the 1190.

You won't regret it. Lots of people tour on them, its more practical than you think. It is even more comfortable than the 1190 and trust me, it is quicker... You'll see when you get used to how that throttle ramp works..

I want an 1190 for touring, which does mean gravelly, pot-holed trackways, I must admit, but as a partner to the 1290, not a replacement. There's nothing remotely like the SDR. You will love it.

Seconded - I switched up from a 650 ST, and find the SDR actually more comfortable than it on a 1000km day.

Speaking of which, does anyone recommend any particular pannier sets?

But it looks so good from behind, who wants to mess that up with panniers?!
I can do a week with a US20+10 on the back seat, as long as I have somewhere to rinse undies and socks every couple days...
