I just can't see how people would prefer to pull it apart and "improve" it when it shreds like this already ;)

Found a kink in my crank breather hose that was causing too much pressure. Sorted that and just given it a clean. Off to get new tyres fit as my rear is about to show cord [GRIMACING FACE]

Yeah, but not the bit in all the tourist brochures...
This is Putty Road, which goes from the outskirts of Sydney north into the Hunter Valley (wine country).
It's about 140km long, and has everything from fast sweepers and long straights, to decreasing-radius hairpins. But the best part for most people is the "10-mile": 16km at the northernmost end that follows and crosses a narrow creek, and contains dozens of turns. A couple of those don't see any sun at all in winter, and moss grows on the road just to keep things interesting. In the summer it's not unusual for bushfires to close the road, as happened about a month ago.
Here's a Google Street View of a typical corner in the 10-mile - 45kmh advised, which makes it a 3rd-gear, 90kmh entry speed on the SDR. But if you fuck it up, you're either into the wall or over the rail...

After seven months festering in the back of the garage, after breaking down on a commute home last year, I put a fresh battery on it and hit the button. It turns over but doesn't, fire, and the engine management light sits there happily flashing away. Bah.

Anyway, van booked for tomorrow morning, and it's off to be looked at. As soon as it's running it'll be going on Ebay, for sale to anyone who wants an SMT that drinks as much oil as petrol. And if that doesn't work, I'm breaking the bastard and it'll go back on Ebay piece by piece.

I never had this much trouble with anything Japanese.

Just out of interest, what's the general condition of it (other than the engine using oil and not starting). What's the mileage, what's it worth and got any pics?

Ha.

Other than the problems with the motor, and a broken steering lock (thanks to a failed attempt to steal it) it's in pretty good condition, especially for one that's done about 40,000 miles through four winters. Certainly scrubs up well. Had new clocks last year, and chain & sprockets.

Photos here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4hfm6p6k7duq ... hJG0a?dl=0

Just noticed one of those is weirdly out of focus. Bugger.

Only accessories are a full set of Trax luggage, which I've put on the XR, a tankbag, which I sold last week, a Scottoiler and heated grips, which are fixed to the bike, and the rails and mounting plate for the Trax luggage, which will go with the bike.

If it wasn't burning oil, it'd be worth about four grand. As it is, well, I'm open to offers, put it that way.

Why so, its going on ebay?

Looks pretty tidy. If it was rough and cheap I was half thinking about about a donor bike for some tuning and customising..

What's the buy it now price then Ogden?

Dunno, I don't usually bother with one - I'm in no rush to sell it, don't need the money, would just like to reclaim the garage space.

Understand. Not nipping at your heels, just curious what a bike like yours might have fetched as seen as a smoker/non-runner. Engine issues aside your looks a bit clean for a project bike.

...and now I've got it back working, I'm not sure I can let it go. Fuck me, what a hoot. It weighs nothing, and I'd forgotten just how instance the throttle response is, and why I spend so little on front tyres.

Speedo pickup seems to have died, so that needs replacing, as I have no speedo and the ABS light won't go out. So I'll fix that and then have a very, very hard think about whether to sell it, or keep it as a weekend toy and run it completely into the ground.

The XR is still going to make a wonderful replacement for the gixer, and for the SMT on touring duties.

What about the oil burning. Is that sorted and what was causing it?

Nope, still smoking. Almost certainly worn rings, and if I sell it, it'll be cheap, with the smoke.

Ebay auction is written, but not listed, with a starting price of 2200. Haven't yet decided if/when to list it. Besides, I need to fix the speedo first.
