2016 KTM 1190 to a 2019 KTM 790

Post by Ponzi » Sat Nov 03, 2018 4:35 pm

Hi, I’m an older rider mid 60’s going to trade in my 1190 for a 790, I like the idea, how ever, I’m concerned about making a bad decision. Any feedback would be appreciated.ImageImage

G'day Ponzi, I'm a 61 yrs young 1290SDGT owner...... there is logic in your decision to change to a lighter easier to handle 790, and the 790 has plenty of poke for solo riding/touring (I think it makes 100hp at the rear tyre so it won't be slow).

I'd have to say a decent test ride (say for a couple of hours) would be your best decision helper. The 1190 is a tall beast - but you may be tall too, otherwise the 790 certainly would be easier to push around the garage etc.

You might miss the convenience of a center stand if it follows the latest trend of no main stand (unless one can be fitted as an accessory?).

I've not seen any luggage options for the 790....... but I haven't been looking........ can't recall how much the fuel tank holds, so range to empty might be less than the 1190 ;).

I'm rapt in my GT....... if road riding is your thing, the GT has fuel range and touring covered (and has gobsmacking power 8-) ).

Cheers from Australia

Ps I don't know what's going on in the 790 forum thread...... there's pages and pages of crap from the same guy in ?Russian? or other language and zero posts in all other threads........ maybe there is another 790 review or forum that could be helpful........

Thanks for the over view, I appreciate your reply. Is the 790 available in Australia?

Yes it is....... I have seen them at my local dealership - they look great too....... but I am recovering from heart surgery (nearly back to normal)...... but cannot drive/test ride etc until the doctors give me the 'all clear' so sadly I cannot go for a spin and let you know what I think.

From what I've read about the 790, it seems to be a fun machine...... but I'd want a 20ltr tank and the option of a screen and luggage to make it a GT style tourer - but that's my preference for a very big country that demands a 350-400km fuel range ;) .

Yes, you’ve got a beauty in your 1290 gt, I’ve had my 1190 for a couple of years, love the power, sure likes the fuel, hoping the790 will be a little less thirsty. Another concern is my height 6’2” the 1190 fits perfect. Sorry about your health half the guys I worked with aren’t here anymore, lucky I’ve got a buddy I ride with!

What kind of riding do U plan on doing? Is the 1190 that hard on fuel?
Kaslo BC! I imagine U have done the run from New Denver to Kaslo 100s of times.?
I think the 790 would be a fun bike. But it must be 40 - 50 HP down on your 1190. Your going to miss that power.

Cheers guys,....... I was just having morning coffee and realized Ponzi was most likely looking at the 790R adv model (not the Duke).

I don't think it has been released in Aus yet (but haven't been down to my KTM shop for a month or so).

The specs read well...... light, torquey, 250mile/400km tank...... just what an 1190 guy might want if he is after even more dirty weekends than he gets from the big toy

Nice that they have the fuel wrapped low around the engine like the old 990's.

:)

Ps I've seen press coverage for a 1090R adv model coming for 2019 too. Do they have a 1290R model (I'd have to look it up..... I'm losing the plot after 8 months not mixing with all my bike circles..... :( ).

Hundreds of times, Kaslo to New Denver, never gets old! Am concerned about the power loss only time I really use it is to pass. No don’t have the R have a quad for the back country.
