SMR front mask on a SMT?

Post by TomekR » Thu Jul 21, 2016 8:34 am

Hi,

somehow I got bored with the look of my SMT.
Now I plan to change the front mask to the one of the SMR.

Has anyone done this before? My concern is, that the frame of the SMR and the SMT are slightly different. On the frame of the SMT (second picture) there are two nuts welded on, that hold the mask in place. (#70 screws)

I don't want to cut them away, so the idea is to make room for them in the backside of the SMR mask.

The question is now, is/will there be any room with all the wires and so on..?

I don't want to spend 200 Euros on the 4 mask parts and then notice that it will not fit... :(

Why did you post the rear parts break down? The front mask is what you're wanting? No fairing I guess? The fuel tank attachments will be different. Plus you'll be involved with changing the speedo/ instrument panel.
The rear is the same as SMR. Pull the existing luggage rack and place the SMR hand holds in the same location.

I think you may be bummed on the wind beating you down on a ride of distance.

I really think you should find a new love of the existing front mask. Decorate it. I should post a photo of mine but not done as of yet. Love the personality of the SMT. Just as wicked as the SMR!

I must say I envy you right now, in Austria? OMG i'm in sweltering heat and humidity and riding with all the gear is so hot. Florida is so beautiful but so hot. I'm a bit concerned. I just learned of the tragic event in Munchen, DE. So close to your home. Be safe.

because, if you look closely at the frame, the steering head is different.. on the SM-T frame there are two nuts welded on the front of it.. and i think that this two nuts can be a problem..

thats what i also tought, but i tried out the 690 Duke R, and it felt nice.. unfortunately the 690 R is sold out in Austria for this year.. :(

and i know have a 15 month old son ( :) ), so i don't even have the time to ride a longer distance.. in the whole last year i just made 300km.. this year around 500km :(

still thinking about changing the SM-T for a 690 Duke R or even a 350 EXC... the insurrance would be cheaper.. i have to pay taxes by the engine size.. and it's a lot to pay with 999ccm..

Fantastic for your son to have a cool Dad! Bummer for the insurance. Where I am, no insurance is required. Figure it will be a total loss anyway. Wear your helmet and be safe for your Son's sake. Just a reminder the SMT is no longer made. It my be worth it to keep it in the long run? I rode with some guys today. One was a 1290SD. I have a more comfy ride at 100+ mph than he did. I think about a change. The new 1290 SD GT is great. But I ,myself, don't need additional payout. Have fun.

I apologize. I looked at the big picture and see the weldment to equip the SMR mask. I still think the monetary investment will be more than trading for an SMR, providing you can find one to do it. Just my opinion. The bike is still just as fun. Try another windscreen and cut it down. I've thought of it for the the same reason but can't change it on my own will.
