KTM auxillary LED light kit

Post by deee-blue » Tue Dec 18, 2012 5:02 pm

Has anyone had any experience with these, part number 62014910033?
The description says it's plug and play so does that mean the standard switch gear will operate it or do you have to use the additional switch supplied? The answer may be obvious but I'd be grateful for any advice from anyone whose fitted them to their bike.

Cheers

Hi.

Fitted these lights few months ago. You have to use the new switch.
Allow a couple of hours for fitting.

Thanks Alien, I have a couple questions if that's OK:
How do you rate the lights?
Are they worth the money?
Assuming the switch is mounted to the handlebar and not to the existing switch cluster. Can you reach the switch easily without letting go of the handlebar?
The lights are described as having a wide angle so can you use the lights during the day (just to make yourself more visible)?
Is the SMT alternator powerful enough to coup with this extra drain on the battery if using them all the time?

Thanks again

Hi

Q1. Lights are good quality.
Q2. My opinion is they are worth the money. No cutting or joining wiring just plug everything in.
Q3. The switch that comes with the lights replaces the whole right hand switch gear.
Q4. The reason I brought them was to make me more visable during the day

I've now fitted the lights and I'm very happy with them. The instruction were succinct but enough to get the job done. I took my time and it all went together beautifully.
Thanks to you Alien for your advice and thanks to KTM for a well designed bike and powerpart.

I have the same lights on my bike, or should I say "had".

They are on my work desk completely disasembled. I am going to put a waterproof pushbutton switch next to instrument cluster to control the lights intensity. There were switches on both lights that control intensity (0.25, 0.5 and 1 amp current) but I removed them and soldered wires directly to waterproof switch. I am also going to permanently leave them on, and put factory light switch back in place as these lights can be turned on/off by holding the switch for 2 seconds.

This way I will have fairly big switch next to instrument cluster that will be able to turn on/off lights as well as control intensity without needing to get off my bike and fiddle with each light separately.

I will post a writeup once I am done and happy with them.

I was considering the KTM kit but have opted for a more budget option with small LED bullet lights to make the bike more conspicuous.
I will let you know how I get on.

I would assume that if you are installing the KTM kit, then the answer would be no since it is their kit rated and designed for being used on the bike. If you were installing an aftermarket light kit, then it is a crap shoot based on how it is installed and tapped into the electrical system and how moody the dealer wants to be in regards to any warranty claims ( meaning if they can even be remotely attributed to any claims)...

I just had the KTM lights installed by the dealer and they looks great. Its still winter here, but from shining them on the garage door and comparing them the original lights, they look like they'll work good. The switch fits like a glove. Really happy with the complete set up.

Probably not... The brackets are quite snug to the underside of the headlight and side cowls. I couldn't fit a pair of cheap projector fogs in there with the SWM brackets

Not a cynic... I just wish it was better:-(

The SMT is Black - the profile drop down doesn't let me put that in!

I've had the KTM spot lights fitted now for about six months and they work really well. The three light levels make them ideal as day time driving lights and night time spot lights. The kit comes with the harness and light cluster all in the box so from my perspective it's worth the extra money.
