1290 Superduke GT Road Trip

Post by steved57 » Wed Sep 27, 2017 3:36 pm

Well it was time for a good road trip so I decided to head to Colorado on the GT with plans of camping a night or two and motels some nights to get a shower & a bed

So I left East Texas on Thursday Sept the 7th and headed to Amarillo which is 500 mile slog across Texas of which I traveled many many times - hot and boring but was still fun since I was on my new GT

So 10 hours later and 501 miles I am at a hotel on West side of Amarillo - get a shower and walk over to Hoffbrau Steak House and few cold beers and a great steak and I'm done for day and ready to hit the sack

The bike did great, was very comfortable to me ( I have installed SW Motech bar back/risers and Knight Designs lowered pegs) the wind protection was good too but I'm really short. The cruise control came in very handy on the long stretches which we have a lot of in Texas

Here's a pic of a famous land mark in Amarillo - The Big Texan - where if you can eat a 72 oz steak in one hour it's free

You have probably noticed I am using a set of soft bags (ADV Spec) as they hold quite a bit more than the hard bags and when planning on camping I had a lot of stuff !!

So Friday morning I head for Cotapaxi Colorado which is if I remember correctly about 430 miles. I leave Amarillo about 8:30 am and the air is a little cooler (not much humidity) and cut across country on smaller roads till I get to I-40 which is a must to get to Cotapaxi Co

I did take the time to go in to the Capucin Volcano state park in Northeast New Mexico

So once finished exploring the volcano I head back out for my destination. I stop in Trinidad Colorado at the Holiday Inn for lunch as they have a nice restaurant/bar - how did I know this ? My brother and I stayed there a couple nights last year when we were in the area on our 690's riding the Shadow of the Rockies TAT
While there I met a couple guys from Florida (with heavy German accents) on BMW's doing the TAT however they were holed up at the hotel watching the hurricane etc... in case they needed to head back home if their area (which was Ft Luaderdale) was hit hard

So back on the road on I-25 (ugh) for a bit then jump off Northwest on great mountain roads for about 100 miles till I get to Cotapaxi - got caught in rain for about 50 miles but no worries as it was still pretty warm out and I dried out pretty quick

Once in Cotapaxi I head to the Sweetwater River Ranch and go in the office and pay for a camping spot right by the Arkansas River. The place has nice bathroom and showers for campers and they also have some nice cabins and RV spots

I go to my camp spot and get my tent set up and all my stuff unloaded - once I was done I head to the Cotapaxi General Store and get some munchies plus a bad ass BLT for supper and the liquor store for some evening drink

So there I am eating my BLT and sipping on a Wild Turkey 101 & coke and the camp manager comes and asks if I want any firewood - so since it was to get to mid fifties that night I thought a campfire would be nice

Then he asked if I wanted to join him and his wife for supper and a drink or two - so I did and they were great folks - They were from California but had been living in Colorado about six months and the guy had ridden his V-Max (which he still has) all over the western US so we had some good stories about riding to talk about

Here's view from my campsite

Camping is awesome as I slept like a baby ! I could hear the river running over the rocks etc.... so pretty relaxing

So next morning I get up and it takes about an hour to get all packed up as it was first time for me actually motorcycle camping

I take a look at my map and decide to just head West with no destination in mind but on curvy roads as much as possible

I head West on Hwy 50 which was beautiful as it wound quite a ways curving along with the Arkansas River
There were lots of cabins, camping spots and whitewater rafting outfits

A little after lunch I arrive in Salida Colorado and stop to get fuel. Once fueled up I decide to go in to the store to get a water & snack so I start to roll my bike away from the fuel pump and damn if converter (or whatever the black box in the GPS wiring is) gets hung in between forks and frame and bike wouldn't turn right at all - could have been a disaster if happened on the road - so got out zip ties and repositioned it

Stopped at a small Thai restaraunt

Left Salida and headed West, stopped in Sargents Co at a store/cabin/camping place as I had heard there were lots of single track in the area and wanted to ask about them (for future trip) if I saw any riders to ask but all I saw were 4 wheeler people so kept on going

Left there and was passing thru Gunnison when I saw a KTM dealership and a Husky dealership which were about 500 feet from each other - went in to the KTM shop and visited with them and one of the parts guys told me about a great road to take - Hwy 92 which runs along a canyon for about 60 miles. It was a great road and beautiful canyon / scenery. So was a great recommendation and much appreciated

Once I got back on Hwy 50 I thought I would head to Telluride and find a nice camping spot BUT once I got a little further West the sky was black with lots of lightning everywhere I looked. Stopped and got some fuel and while there looked at weather map on my phone and going South looked clear. So I went as far as Ouray and it was getting dark so instead of camping I got a room. Went to a nice Pizza joint and had beers and pizza and visited with couple dual sport guys who were riding some of the continental divide passes - we drank beer till kind of late

Got up the next morning and packed up and headed South

Here's a shot of Ouray which goes by the name Little Switzerland

That morning while getting the bike loaded up I looked at weather map and the whole sate of Colorado showed rain (It and Florida due to the hurricane - the rest of the country was dry - go figure) so I decided to head South to New Mexico - Taos was the destination

A few pic's along the way

The roads I took from Colorado in to and thru Northern New Mexico were quite rough and beat up but the scenery and desolation which I enjoy were fantastic

For a large part of it I was on the Jicarillo Navajo Indian Reservation

Here I am in New Mexico in hilly scrub desert and I pop over a ridge and see this

On toward Taos I headed Southeast on great roads with lots of great scenery

Somewhere along the way like around Dixon if I remember correctly I passed and saw lots of race bikes in trucks and on trailers so there must have been a desert race in the area that day

It was pretty uneventful the rest of the way to Taos however I did stop and check out the Rio Grande gorge which is like 600 feet deep at that point. Definitely worth the stop to check it out. There were lot's of tourist and also a lot of vendors selling souvenirs etc...

Arrived in Taos around 5:30 hot, sweaty and thirsty. I went straight to the "Historic Taos Inn" which has been in continuous operation since the late 1930's and has a bar famous for margaritas and I had always wanted to stay there. I have been in Taos skiing quite a few times but always stayed up on the mountain.
Taos is a cool little town with a kind of weird vibe ( lot's of holistic, spiritual, yoga, tantra kind of stuff) like Santa Fe but much smaller

That night sat in the bar enjoying margaritas a great meal of trout and visited with quite a cast of characters

Packed up the next morning and headed for Texas
Ready to head home.jpg
A couple hours after leaving Taos I am in a pretty desolate area on a long long straight road so I am cruising approx. 85 mph and I come up on a couple 18 wheelers and just after I passed them and am probably going 95 mph now there is a LOUD explosion !!! I am thinking tire blowout and ready to hopefully ride it to a stop and not get thrown on the ground - however the 18 wheelers are not that far behind me and there is no shoulder
Then I realize it can't be the tire as bike feels normal (this all goes thru my head in about a second) so I slow down and find a place to pull over. Now mind you this explosion was louder than any blowout I've ever heard but I am thinking what the hell ??? I get off bike and tire looks fine so I start to get on bike and then think I am not going anywhere till I know what that was !! So I walk to the back of bike and see this
Exploded view !!!.jpg
Okay so my propane tank for my jetboil used to be there in a pocket of the soft bags which used to be there, my blinker is gone, reflector bracket is bent, under tray of the fender broken apart and roll mat bag ripped open - THAT WAS SOME EXPLOSION

So I had already been 1800 miles so why it blew up when it did I don't know but damn it scared the heck out of me

That day I rode about 550 miles and ended up in Merkel Texas , got a room, slept got up and headed toward home - stopped by Munn Racing in Waco where I bought my bike and had the service indicator reset as I do all my service myself

Left there and slogged the three hours home

So I rode right at 2,350 miles over the six days of my trip - to me the bike was comfortable, fun to ride, I averaged 46 mpg and it never missed a lick

I really like this bike and am ready for another trip :D

Nice pics and report mate. Looks and sounds great. Sometimes it's good to have no fixed plans eh? and just go on the hoof as we say here.

I did something similar on this side of the pond last year travelling from Scotland down through the Channel tunnel. My trip took me the length of France over the Route Nepoleon then across the southern French coast and down through Andorra and into Northern Spain.

Like you I had an experience right at the end of the tour too when a crazy Spanish Audi driver decided my side of the road was preferable to his own. End result was my bike had resulting gravel rash and I had a broken foot.

Has it put me off? Not a bit of it, I'm busy planning next years as we speak. Reading of other people adventures like your own only serve to inspire me to do more of the same. :D

Cheers, I'm fine now as that was almost a year ago to the day so all good now. My brother is heavy into dirt bikes at a competitive level. I sometimes go see him and his pals race and they are always telling me to get rid of the road bike........too dangerous. Ironically there's usually one of them on crutches or in plaster too

Can't beat the open road for me. It's just what floats my boat I suppose. Always has, and still to this day I have an enthusiasm to go explore new places.

Oh I love the open road too and will always have a street bike - I just turned 60 and am still pretty competetive on the dirt bike and love the physical and mental requirements as I think that keeps you young and damn it makes me smile :D

That was a great write up, much appreciated, although going for the gas assisted take off was a trifle optimistic :D
Glad all ended well and Im looking forward to your next write up, the GT does indeed create excitement and enthusiasm where ever she, ahem, it goes
