Europe Trip- Germany Austria Italy

Post by Johnny Mac » Sat Jun 27, 2015 5:01 pm

Well, just back on Wednesday from an awesome trip to the Germany, Italy and Austria.

We had the bikes shipped via Overlanders and it worked out a treat, no way that we would have all gotten Visa’s from the home department for long enough to ride the bikes over ☺

We arranged the pickup location with Derek from Overlanders and they were packed up a week before we were due to hit.

We landed into Memmingen airport which is tiny and were on the bikes within 30 minutes

Saddlin up

Image

Headed for the Hotel Sonne in Fussen which was only an hour down the road as we landed at 7 in the evening.

The Hotel carpark looked more like a nightclub than a carpark.

The obligatory “Tour T-shirts”

Image
Good idea at the time….

Image

Day 2 saw us heading to Bormio via the Fern Pass and Stelvio to name just a couple of landmarks.

Big Castlet yoke outside Fussen, heads not good at this point

Image

Stop on the Fern pass for the biggest burger ever

Image

Image

Stelvio is an awkward bit of road and one of the lads let the bike go over twice when he stopped. No lasting damage

Image

We stayed at the Miramonti Park Hotel in Bormio, a very quiet town this time of year.

Image

Poor your own beer in the steak house. 3 litres doesn’t go far

Image

Day 3 had us depart Bormio and head for Livinallongo in the Dolomites. Hotel Cesa Padon was recommended by Overlanders and was good value and half board too, being in the wilderness.

Great reception put in for us

Image

A top the Gavia Pass

Image

A little break along the way.

Image

The route avoiding Bolzano was a great idea

Image

View from the hotel.

Image

View from the bar

Image

Lock up garages with cleaning facility too

Image

Day 4 we stayed local on the same hotel and did all the local passes

Gardena Pass

Image

Giau Pass

Image

And a few more……

Savage view of, eh clouds from the cable car from Arabba.

Image

Image

Grappa, not a great idea

Image

Day 5 had us pack up and head for the Hotel Wirsthaus Post in St Johann.

Damp start but picked up

Image

We happened across this savage spot for elevensees in the middle of nowhere.

Image

Well worth the €24.50 on the toll road was the Glosslockner pass and glacier. Surface was by far the best on any mountain pass that we had been on.

Image

Image

Image

More tae on the way to St Johann

Image

Good night had in St Johann in a bar that resembled something from Inglorious Basterds, including the barman waving a meat cleaver at us, apparently for the craic.

Image

Day 6 was an early start back on the road for Memmingen for a 4:30 flight in the afternoon.

Back at the lock up

Image

In the a nice square in the middle of Memmingen.

Image

An action packed 6 days and I think I’m still recovering.

If anyone wants details on the Hotels on routes just gimme a shout.

I dream of Stelvio on the 1290, so I'm jealous of you for that.
And by the looks of those beers, you do my kinda touring.
Cheers mate...
