By Land and Sea....an Alaskan adventure

Post by smithers167 » Sun Aug 10, 2014 1:19 am

Hello fellow adventurers. My name is Chris and I'll be your host. A year ago my fellow coworkers/ riding buddies came to me with an plan to go to Alaska. Begging for leave the 4 of us were able to secure the time off. The year flew by and now it is time to go. August 11th is the departure date and we should arrive home on the 30th. We are departing from Bellingham, north of Seattle Washington. I guess you could say our destination is the ferry terminal in Whittier AK.

Some other destinations we have
-Smithers (obviously)
-Hyder
-Dawson City (Toe shot)
-dead horse(depending on weather)
-Denali
-Kenai

We have 3weeks including the 4 day ferry ride home.
Our plan is to camp as much as possible with hostiles occasionally and maybe a hotel or two.

I'd like to make a quick shout out to ruffntuff for her amazing writing and courage for doing a trip to Alaska solo. Your report has been very motivating to get this trip going for me. I couldn't stop reading. I will point out that I will try and update with a few pictures on the road but I'll be doing everything via my phone on WiFi and will do a better report when i get back.

OK, so on to the bikes.....our gang has a single, twin, 3cylinder and 4.
-2012 DR650
-2012 Tiger 800xc
-2006 FZ-6
- And my 2012 KTM SMT 990

Everyone is running soft bags and waterproof Duffles. I'll try to get pictures of what holds up and what doesn't and some impressions of the gear.

For tires.... the fz and I will be running tourance next tires ( we were planning on Dunlop d616's but they were discontinued), the tiger is running k60's and the DR is running the stock trail wings (I believe)

My gear is a Wolfman medium dry bag, moose racing rear rack bag, a couple rei light weight roll bags for tent and rain gear, my stock panniers, and 2 rotopax 1 gallon( my 990 is thirsty), and KTM tank bag.

The rain cover that comes with the moose racing bag sucks and I don't want to take up room in the stock side bags with the included roll bags so I hit them with NeverWet. I know I will get some moisture through the zips so anything I don't want wet is in zip locks.

I will post up some pictures of the bikes and us before we leave the country Monday morning.

I suppose you're thinking that it's safer to have your enemies close so that you can keep watch on them but I'd be too skeered to sleep with them in the same camp!

Sounds like an awesome time!

Watch that SM-T front in the mud... Of course with the load you have it should be easy to just wheelie through any slick stuff! :)

Hope you all have a great time. Looking forward to the pics so I can participate vicariously through you all.
