Short Trans Andes Ride Chile-Argentina-chile

Post by Chileansurg » Wed Nov 06, 2013 3:51 pm

Hello fellow SMT owners

As you all now, I had been preparing for a TransAndes Trip for a while. Finally I departed last thursday with a 978 k's ride the first day, 660 of slab, some 250 k's of twisties and the rest gravel/dirt roads.

Image

Little did we know we would encounter rain after 300 kms all the way until crossing the border, including gravel/dirt which was mud at that stage.

ImageCheck the muddy road!

We finally arrived at San Martin de Los Andes in Argentina after a 6 hours delay at the border, crossing while it was snowing on the Argentinian side for the first 40 kms, gushing winds and poor visibility. Second day we had a very sunny one, so we went around the 7 lakes with some impressive backdrops and near perfect tarmac for some 150 kms ride around the twisties.

On day three, more great asphalt roads, some passes with good twisties but also really long straights on the Argentinian Patagonia (elevated at around 1500 - 2200mts flats with desert like vegetation)

Image

And then the dirt/gravel roads at 1500+ mts above sea level... with native pine trees (Araucarias) and snow on the desert

We finally made it to another border crossing pass, this time no delays and excelent roads, tarmac on Argentina and a really rough but beautifull gravel road on Chile.

We plodded through a very difficult gravel road on our way to the last day's sleeping place, which ended up being a beautiful lodge up in the mountains... I managed to get a rear tire puncture, but rubber strips and a portable air pump did the job on the spot

Last day was basically 120 kms of twisties and then a 600 kms run down the slab with very heavy traffic, car accidents, etc etc running of the very last layer of rubber of the rear tire. Not good but made it safe and sound back home with still a little left...

Image Now THAT is making good use of the rear tire

Well mates, that's pretty much it. Almost 2500 kms in 4 days. All things considered, it was an awesome ride and Keity was up to the job. Still sore from all that riding, but looking forward for the next one...

Cheers!
