"Out and about" - Last day of winter, Adelaide Hills

Post by limeyduffa » Sat Aug 31, 2013 7:52 am

I went for a ride today. Last day of winter. It was a hot one today - 25C. I decided to bolt the camera in interval mode to the bike. I don't normally do this now days due to our Draconian state government and their war against motorcyclists (my camera can be used to implicate me, so normally not worth the risk). I didn't do any silly stuff, so fairly boring. .. but anybody outside Australia, it will give you an idea of where I ride.

Snake Gully (stopped to remove bee from helmet)

Bushland near Hermitage

Paracombe heading to Gorge Rd (sorry, my Pentax W80 potato doesn't do the landscape judice)

Gorge Rd, from 2nd Bridge to Cudlee pub. This is my flavourite leg. Escapement one side, crash barrier the other. It's best done at night IMO :)

The start of "Chain of Ponds"

Chain of Ponds. This landscape used to be covered with giant pine trees. It looked extremely scenic, but were cut down about 2 years ago. Now the scenery looks fuggy. Epic. Well done Council

Para Wirra. Typical landscape in the Adelaide Hills this time of the year. In two months time, this landscape will be brown.

South Para Reserve (I couldn't stay here long.. and illegal to stop on bridge)

Fields of cow slip near Gawler.

Note: Camera took a photo every 15 seconds.

Thanks! It's always fun to see nice pictures from where others ride. Replace those Eucalyptus tree with Oaks and it looks a lot like the foothills of Northern California in March when the grass is green. Brown now and forest fires :|

Not quite sure how to break this to you Limeyduffa, but the pine trees are plantations that you plant, cut down and build houses with
We have....oops HAD thousands of hectares of them here in the South East until our broke State govt. sold them to spend the money on a bloody cricket ground  - rant over.

The story goes is that a group of kids from a local school planted them many years ago. This stretch was about 2-3 acres. So, if that's the case, the council have swapped a bit of coin for an ugly landscape. I doubt it was for money. I'm guessing it's more to do with some bullshit ISO 9000 safety standard. I'll have to dig up a photo of how it used to look. It made the scene look very european.

Yeah, we do have plantations here, but they professionally managed and much much bigger.
