SW-Motech Handlebar Guards on 2017 KTM SDGT

Post by GaryCulb » Wed Jan 03, 2018 9:31 pm

Wanted some Handlebar Guards for my 2017 KTM SDGT. Options were somewhat limited. KTM OEM Handlebar Guards hit the instrument panel & windshield. So, we went with SW-Motech Handlebar Guards. The product installed was the SW-Motech with the extension & LED Turn signals ( http://shop.sw-motech.com/en/4052572029725,i24.htm , http://shop.sw-motech.com/en/4052572021453,i15.htm , http://shop.sw-motech.com/en/4052572021439,i27.htm ) by the KTM dealer. I asked for power to the turn signals to be from the PDM60.
The first thing you notice after the install is the old OEM bar ends. These OEM bar ends include ant-vibration components. Sure enough when you ride the bike with just the SW-Motech Handlebar Guards there is a Significant Increase in Handlebar vibration.

Got on to the phone with Fasst & sure enough they recommended their threaded anti-vibration inserts ( https://www.fasstco.com/collections/mot ... on-inserts ). You have to tap the 14 mm KTM handlebar with the 5/8 tap they provide.

Combined the Fasst threaded anti-vibration inserts with the Barkbuster Teardrop Handlebar Guard end weights ( https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/bar ... nd-weights ) and, the vibration was Completely GONE!!

Wow Doc. ;) Nice job and way to work through the the issues. It looks really sharp—especially the LED turn signals. Was it difficult to wire in the turn signals?

There are certain things you let your dealer install. This was one of them for me since, if I purchsed the accessory they installed it free. I do know that if you do this install the LEDs require SW-Motech Resistors ( http://www.twistedthrottle.com/sw-motec ... rs-15-ohms ). Connections should be heat shrinked. Best,
