Burning smell?

Post by Clogan » Thu Dec 07, 2017 12:13 am

I've had my SDGT for a couple of months now, ridden 2500 miles or so. I still notice the odor of something burning when I park. I have suspected this is due to newness of the bike, or maybe "break in" of the header wrap, but the odor remains just as pronounced now as it was the day I took delivery. Anybody else smell something burning?

I have 9357 miles on mine now and I still notice this occasionally and think it might be the brake pads. I've been doing some hard braking tests from fairly elevated speeds to get a benchmark for the new brake pads I'm about to try, and its really noticeable when I come to a standstill after that. No signs of anything wrong with the bike and its done this since it was new.

I sense a similar odour and I put it down to chain lube burning off the collector box under the motor.. ;)

I'm a classic over oiler and I can see plenty of chain splatter around the foot peg/sprocket area

I'm guessing, but if it isn't that then it could be some oil fumes escaping the airbox via a breather....

I'd like to lift my tank off and have a good look, but I'm close to my warranty scheduled 15k km service so I'll let them do their stuff this time, then next year I'll get in there when the K&N filter needs cleaning/oiling.
