Headlight Protector - 1290Gt

Post by Aussie Dave » Sun Sep 17, 2017 6:02 am

Greetings WWW 1290GT owners..

My BMW R1200RT mate just reminded me about protection...... no not that  geeze,..... I'm talking stone impact protection for the headlight...

It is just curved enough to deter me from using the adhesive 'Lite-Skinz' style and I found only AMHP make an acrylic 3mm curved protector to suit the GT......$75Aus........ anybody have other ideas or does the GT avoid nasty stone cracks due it's low and slim front aspect?

I intend to apply the 'Lite-Skinz' adhesive to the indicator/cornering lights......my BM mate now has a cracked indicator lens that will cost hundreds of $ to replace (as it is a complete unit - not a screw off cover like you'd expect) to add to his cracked main light protector (done it's job ;) ).......told him he was game touring in the north of Queensland......if a "roo" don't get ya, a truck/4wd will crack ya lights!

I've cut my own headlight and turn signal protection out of ventureshield, in fact I've wrapped all the plastics in clear film and after 8k you would no find a mark on my bike.

Cheers Super Dave in Houston... :)

I nearly opted for the kit you found......except the Aussie agents didn't list it for the GT... :(

It might have been worth the $100Aus or so just to have the two professionally cut LED pieces, but, I laboriously made a template and cut two pieces from my scrap "Lite Skinz" adhesive kit and luckily the job turned out well.... :o

I only made one error (well, two, but I got away with that one  ).....I should have cut the pieces intentionally larger than required (it was way easier to trim to shape after applying the film) rather than try to make them a perfect fit.......the risk being going off centre while applying them.......but I'm such a lucky sod

However, I have chickened out with the main headlight......I will order the AMHP 3mm acrylic screen as I don't want to have any bubbles/blemishes on the headlight (the LED's are small and tucked away so the odd imperfection is not noticeable ;) ). And I'm not overly concerned with paint protection for the panels - might get in the way of potential repairs/resprays/etc, or new panels if I'm unlucky enough to deck GT properly.

For anyone interested.....the photo on Zed's site (or AMHP) is not representative.....I've had AMHP covers before and they look brilliant once on the headlight.....the web site shot is a very bad angle/lighting ;)

Anyway, I'm pleased with my days toil (early ride of both bikes - locally - to charge up batteries after 4 weeks of struggle with weird virus that worrries the victim into thinking it could be a heart problem......instead it was just gas in the gut... as well as white face, stinging eyes, sick feeling after eating etc etc - takes 5 weeks to run it's course.. ).....

Roll on next weekend.....I've got some kms to catch up so I can do an oil change.... 8-)

Hey Mr C ......

That surface protection stuff is great.....best applied by an experienced hand (they make it look so easy) but I don't have the time to find some one to do it , and I don't trust my capabilities further than a small job like the LED lights...

Cheers and thanks for the responses :)

Well i've got the rather large headlight cover......intending to fit a-s-a-p...... I've already done a reasonably good job on the LED side lamps (adhesive 'Lite Skinz' cover) ...... but the Zed's protector was not cheap after the $15 freight was added to the $75 price.......and it took a week to get here (don't they know about "overnight satchel post"??).

Anyway, I'm better at sticking one of these on than applying adhesive film protector to a complex curved surface....

Must say - it does look just like the photo on the web page.......they used to make such nice looking covers when they were known as AMHP, or maybe it's just the size of the GT's 'big eye'..... ;)

G'nite kids....been a long hot day here in sunny Queensland (Aus).

At long last I've fitted the Zed's/AMHP acrylic headlight protector....

So thats done....... now all i need to do is tidy up one of the clip lock mounts that didn't go where I wanted it.

Still, it looks good even if it is a tad bigger than the actual headlight....... I'm happy with it ;)

It was a prick to get centralised..... and it looked awful with the Puig screen when it was off centre, but now I've got it in the right spot - I bought some better clip lock tape from the local hardware super store, which I cut to shape rather than use those odd round tags supplied - mine feels solid and the shaped lock tabs almost blend in with the KTM DRL design...... 8-)

Now, rain rain go away, come back again some other day......not this weekend...

I want to ride my GT and also enjoy the telecast from Philip Is (Moto GP Aus round)...... though the last round in Motegi was very entertaining (wet wet wet) I'd prefer to see a dry track at PI ;)

I went last year to Philip Island, fuk it was cold, hovered between 11-12C, i hope is sunny and warmer there this weekend, thats where the best racing is at when its dry., but last weeks race was amazing, hopefully another close one with Dovi taking the chequered flag. Go the Redbill KTMs also.

Its funny watching Phillip Island motogp from up here, Australia, blue skies, blue seas.... and the commentators keep saying its cold! We are entering autumn and it just looks so nice, remember the seagull cooking in Dovi's? fairing a couple of years ago. Lets hope the tyres are upto it this year eh?

G'day all....... yeah, the PI racing was blessed with dry track on Sunday..... just as well  and the KTM's got their best result.......but what happened to the Ducati onslaught? It was nice of MarkMarquez to let Jack Miller have a few laps of local glory......but then again, he had nothing to loose before going over to the Red bike in 018 so why not give it the berries..... ;) ......err, they rode like they were Queenslanders on their way to work......banging fairings, leaning on each other, what a way to earn a buck ;)

Ok Ok back on topic - ere's a pic of my "andywork" - I'm fully protected now, so nuthin will ert me....eh?

It's a big-un but it looks good and I wasn't game to attempt a permanent stick-on style protector film over that tricky looking curved 'eye'..

I cut my own clip lock strips rather than use the circular style supplied.......just thought it might blend in better with the DRL pattern......and hold on better than those pissy little grippers supplied by Zed's.
