G'day from the Aussie wrecker

Wheeled the GT out this morning (Saturday in Aus) and - hey, WTF - didn't notice these last weekend after fitting the Pug tinted screen..

Shitbuggerbum...... I have to admit shame and guilt......because I was the idiot who mounted the screen, therefore I must have over-tightened the screws - otherwise the above wouldn't have happened.... :?:

Or has this happened to other hapless Puig-illist's trying to put their screens on and being tricked by the rubber washers into torquing the screws up tighter than they intended?

Anyway......damage done......where to from here?

Do these cracks get bigger after loosening the screws ?

Is there any way of reinforcing the damaged area?

I've taken the screen off while I ponder my navel (reinstalled the KTM screen)....... but I sure do like the look of the Puig.......just wish they had reminded me to not over-tension the screws (like in the 70's).. :(

Right-oh......been pondering and wandering the aisles in our local hardware store........spotted some adhesive clear 19mm dia slimline furniture protection buttons......hmmmm.....these might help stabilise the cracks (only on the inside surface - phew!)..... and if I support them with a 19mm s/s washer and reassemble without the rubber washer......(the oem KTM screen is hard mounted ;) )......this could work.......I hope

But not today - no rushing in where angels fear to tread eh ;) .....and I'm still fighting off a virus that has been trying to knock me down.....so I'll wait till next week.....might come up with another even better idea...

Oh - WSBK racing on free to air TV......clunk.....durrrrrrrrrr

Ok Ok ...... better idea has surfaced and work is in progress...

I had some leftover 2mm thick headlight protector film sitting on a shelf  , and figured I could cut out some larger adhesive support washers (35mm dia) and then go buy some better fairing screws (with 19mm heads instead of pissy little screws supplied with tiny nylon washers).........

Yeah, well, I think it'll work.......if not, nothing lost as the screen was probably done for with the cracks anyway.

Lesson learn't........be ultra careful with screens - even if they are 3mm thick ;)

Cheers all....

Dave, if you can find some acrylic solvent (sold in plastic stores), it's very thin and wicks into cracks quite well. Apply it carefully on the hole surface (not the Whole surface) and it might work.

Cheers mate.. :)

My 'repairs' didn't look like they were going to work so I'm thinking your suggestion is the go....

I spent some time investigating the 'why' and discovered a better way to mount the screen.....the surfaces are not flush with the metal extension mounts......but the cracks need to be reinforced or 'welded' - so once I've fixed them I'll know how to "loosely" re-mount the screen. Pity the mounting system is so poorly designed, but at least I now know what to look for and how best to mount the screen in future.. ;)

So as it is heading into our spring-summer the KTM screen will be fine......but I love the tinted look.....

Ha ha bloody ha......visited a local plastic welder business and he showed me the acrylic thinner mentioned above (it is some un-pronounceable chemical...found it on line too.....loook for 'Weld-on #4).

He basically said don't try it (showed me how easy it was to make a mess) and so off I waddled thinking that he's right but i'd still like to try......though my reinforcements might just be enough, coupled with the slightly different way of mounting (I swapped the long screws to the upper mounts and deleted the rubber washers from the lower mounts - and stuck slim table top adhesive pads on all four screen holes to get a better fit).

So any body fitting a Puig screen.....it's nice.....but look carefully and err on the loose fit side of nipped.. ;)
