KTM Top Case

Post by bigman32hockey » Fri Mar 24, 2017 9:32 pm

Just saw the new top case in the 2017 Powerparts catalog. Anyone out there purchase one yet? Wondering what they think of fit, style, quality, etc.

That looks like an engine case cover - I also saw the KTM 'Top Case' luggage photo - or 'Top Box' as we call it in Aus....it appeared in the cat. after I bought a new SH34 Shad ordinary top box....I wonder what the price will be for the orange and also how much for the rack to mount it

It looks nice in the catalogue pics - it will be made by Shad (they make the GT's side cases) - so I assume it will be similar quality.

Cheers from Aus

So I purchased the KTM top case along with the optional passenger backrest pads. Only problem is I can't put it on the bike because for some reason the mounting bracket won't be available in the US for another month! Not exactly sure why they would make everything available except the mounting bracket, but from what I've seen from KTM, this is par for the course. Frustrating, but I guess that's just the way it goes. Case is sweet though.

Fear not Bigguy32...... I was at KTM Central here in Aussie on Tuesday (had my dodgy looking coolant hose replaced) and while collecting my SW Motech GT rack that I ordered from errr SW Motech  , I asked my spares angel about the KTM top case.....it was $500Aus and 48 Ltrs, the rack looks great but had no pricing available (as per your experience) - though I recognised it straight away as an SW Motech "made for KTM" deal.

I'm guessing it will be approx $350Aus (might be more  ) as my rack was $240Aus and is the one that bolts together to suit both the SDR and GT - have to order the case specific mounting plate, that's another $70Aus (I didn't need it as my plastic base plate bolted nicely to the bare rack plate). ;).....and wait 4-6 wks for the Euro factory to manufacture to order (not stocked).

Here's a pic of my handy work.....SH34 Shad generic top case fitted to SW Motech rack... :D

It won't hold as much as your 'Made for KTM by Shad' 48Ltr special, nor will it look as good (and yur rack will be the complete ready to go version......but I only wanted a 30-ish Ltr size and when I saw the FAKE carbon fibre detailing I was hooked.... (also, was happy the price was $170Aus.....I know.....cheapskate.... )

Looks good Aussie Dave! I'll be honest, I kinda fought purchasing the top case, as I know this is a SPORTS Tourer, but I do a fair amount of 2-up riding with my wife and she's said on more than one occasion she thought I was going to throw her off the back! I bought it largely for her (hence why I bought the passenger backrest pads), but the extra storage will also come in handy for our overnight trips. I don;t plan on leaving it on while I'm riding alone. Eagerly awaiting the mounting bracket now so I can put it all together. Cheers!

Cheers mate, I concur. Can't imagine not having a "trunk" to chuck stuff in on weekenders.......

Ps I just did a 'tour' this weekend......1300kms, and the GT was super comfy. I used 1+Luggage and left the damping on 'comfort'. Had about 25kg of "stuff" all up including the cases and top case, and the GT was divine even on some of our lumpiest of lumpy secondary country roads. If I selected 'street' damping, the thing became as sporty as anyone would want on real world roads......bloody amazing machine! :D

So i finally got the Carrier Plate for the Powerparts 48L topcase. Does anyone know if the plate is supposed to slide left or right slightly after being tightened to 10nm as the instructions say? It seems odd that they would want a case moving around at 100mph or with a passenger using it as a backrest. Does anyone here have experience with this carrier plate? It just became available here in the US, so there is basically nothing I can find on the internet about it.

On a side note, anyone know why this thing costs $350? I mean, theres barelt anything to it. I was blown away by the cost.

Struth Mr Big......it is September and the rack just shows up....6 months... :o

I wouldn't think that top plate should move.....you might have to have a close look and make sure everything looks to be in the right position. My rack is nice and tight and I've made sure nothing moves around...(put some extra bolts in to lock it in the spot you want). ;)

Anything that is 'made for xyz' is going to cost heaps - and if it's from SW Motech it will cost plenty but at least it is good quality. (I'm happy I got away with $240aus for my rack...still had to wait 4-6weeks...but I saved a motza buying a generic top case. :) ).

cheers from Aus ;)

So I called KTM Customer Service here in the US and left a message asking if the movement was correct. I received a voicemail back that in fact this was designed into the carrier plate. The Rep. unfortunatley did not elaborate as to WHY this was designed into the plate. I can't for the life of me understand why they would want it to move side to side at all. Seems logical that it would be locked in place. Wondering if KTM is simply trying to reinvent tbe wheel here. Thoughts?

It does sit quite a ways back on the bike. Its more pronounced when the side bags arent mounted. This is also the larger top case they offer (48l). They make a smaller one that probably wouldnt look like it was as far back. Took my son for a ride last night with it installed. Soooo nice to be able to have some fun while not worrying about throwing my family off the back. Not an inexpensive setup by any means,, but seems worth it so far.

Yeah, that's the price you pay for two up comfort......if you look at the mounting plate, it just might accept a smaller top case (ie a 29Ltr etc) for short day rides...... gives a choice, the 48 for full weekends and a small light one for quick trips to the candy store... ;)

Gotta compliment you on the showroom errr bike garage sir! Very neat and organised.....I'm green with envy

  I was too slow to add that the 48Ltr would make it easier to pop big wheel-stands when loaded ;)

The end of my ordinary Motech rack lines up with the rear wheel, whereas the made for KTM luxo rack is even further back past the wheel to allow the pillion backrest pad to fit. Most of my bikes have been comfy for passengers with just the bare top case to lean on and even the infamous Caponord 1200TP only had a neat trimmed slim back rest.....KTM must think a passenger needs extra G force padding....

Just remembererd  ....that top plate that wants to slide around and scratch itself to death was listed as an extra for my rack, at $70 Aus, so I decided to adapt the generic Shad's little plastic plate that came with the case (it can be bought separately to suit case model for approx $20 Aus....I bought one to fit my CBR1100xx so I can quickly swap the top case.).otherwise I'd have spent $310Aus on the rack c/w plate...almost as much as BigJo's rig......cheers all. 8-)

I ordered a Ventura top box and rack today (https://www.ventura-bike.com/Astro-Top-Box-VTB1432-B) so I'll post some pics once I get it installed.

I've got the KTM large bag (http://www.ktm.com/powerparts/travel/st ... el=F9960Q2) but its a little "compact" and its not exactly waterproof even after I gave it some treatment so I'll keep it for when I need extra storage but its not doing the job at the moment.

Yeah, gotta say it's a lot easier to swing a leg over the pillion seat instead of trying to leap on in front of a large seat bag strapped onto the back seat.. I'm not too sure how strong the side stand really is, so for the few times when I stand on the peg to do the 'horse' style mount (ie with panniers on) I fear one day that method might end in tears......or

Does the rack stay there permanently or is it easy enough to remove and reinstall?
First-time poster here setting up my new SDGT. Took the Mrs. along yesterday for the last 100 miles of break-in up and down my favorite canyon. She's loving the ride but definitely wants the back rest for any kind of mileage. I am not a fan of the rack sticking out back there the 50-75% of the time I'm running with just a small tail bag and no panniers.

Alternately, has anyone come across a good solution for pillion backrest only? Sorry if there's another thread on this somewhere, I haven't come across it yet though. I sure appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experience on here!
