DID chain.

Post by DaveNZ » Wed Nov 13, 2019 4:55 am

Well i have a 6000km NZ South Island ride coming up so i decided at 32,000kms to replace the chain and front sprocket. The stock chain and to my amazement the front sprocket were still in great condition. Oh well they are new now. I got a 112 link DID chain, but it wouldn't fit over my aftermarket 40 tooth rear sprocket, so close but not quite, so i refitted the stock 38 tooth sprocket. Maybe once the chain is bedded in i could refit the 40. Well bike is ready for the big trip.

Cheers Dave'o....... you probably should have bought a longer length chain and a 17/42 combo and just re-riveted to length...... the GT is so deceptively tall geared...... I'm liking the 16/40 on mine, but I miss the slightly stronger feeling of torque you get from the 17t...... so going +4 on the rear is I think a better way to get a nicer spread of gearing.

I think you'll quickly re-discover why you changed the oem gearing..... I did a swap back to check and hated the 17/38  .

Il take the GT out for a ride today then try the 40 tooth again, leaving on Wednesday so have a few days to bed the chain in. Shouldn't of changed the originals, but never mind, i usually find OEM chains crap out around 20-30'000 kms, seems KTM put top quality chains and sprockets on.
