Warranty coverage for 2016 SDGT?

Post by Clogan » Wed Jan 03, 2018 4:52 pm

In reading the KTM warranty coverage for 2016 bikes sold in the USA, the SDGT is not listed. The Superduke R however, is listed. Coverage is described as 12 months/12,000 miles for engine, frame and swingarm only. No other components are covered. I am surprised to see such limited coverage for the SDR, and even more surprised to see no mention of the 2016 SDGT.

Does this mean that there is no warranty coverage for the 2016 SDGT?

Posed the question to the dealer...he is checking. At time of purchase, I was told it was 12/12, but now that I look for something in writing, this is what I find.

Any further info out there among the ridership?

The second batch of GTs imported to NZ, came from the US, and for us, we get a 24 month full warrantee. Thats a minimum here for all new vehicles.
2016 1290GT-remus link and muffler, 2010 Black 1200 Multistrada full Termi system with mapping, 2005 SMR 640, full Titanium system, Mikuni flatside racing carb, 2 sets of wheels, 18 litre tank, and a nice soft seat.

Wondering how "full" your wty is, vs. ours.

For 2016 Superduke R, (again, the GT is not mentioned) in the USA, items NOT covered by warranty would include: all electronics, including ABS system, brakes, wheels and tires, battery, lighting, cruise control, heated grips, paint, etc, etc, etc.

The ONLY coverage is for frame, engine, and swingarm. Anything else is expressly excluded from coverage. And what coverage there is, expires at the earlier of 12 months or 12,000 miles.

One good thing: in USA, we can do our own routine maintenance and not void the warranty.

The Warrantee pretty much covers everything, including battery. on my first 1290R, under warrantee they replaced the tail light (Broken) and the rear axle, (play in wheel), on my GT they replaced the broken spur on the stand. so no worries getting warrantee work done here.

This SDGT is first new bike I have purchased since 1971...always have bought used bikes otherwise. Its ironic that the SDGT has only a slightly better warrantee than all the used bikes I've bought thru the years, which had none at all.

It is curious that AUS bikes of the same model year and same model type have significantly better warranty coverage than those in USA. Wonder why that is the case?

I got 24 months on my 16' GT, this should hold true throughout the country I'd hope.

Really? 2 years warratny in the US? I bought my '16 in November and it only had a 1 year warranty. When did you purchase yours akamire? That may be how they slashed the price so steeply and offered the dealers a rebate.

I bought a demo. Turns out that KTM warranty clock starts when bike is placed in demo service, NOT when it is retailed. This policy is different from most other manufacturers. It is also different from all car/truck warranties that I am familiar with.

I bought my bike in October 2017; my warranty expires September 2018. Covers only frame, engine and swingarm. I do not know if "engine" includes transmission, but I would hope (and also doubt) that it does. Best case is I never have to worry about warranty.

I've been lucky: since buying first bike in 1971, I have never had to go to a dealer for anything other than parts. (Fingers crossed luck continues).

I bought a demo also on July 13th of 16, I called them last spring and they said l had 400+ days left on my warranty. I'm in Indiana if that would make a difference. One thing to mention is the dealership I deal with only sell KTM and are all about service.
I bought a 14' model XCW 500 in late 15' from them that had some charging issues 6 months down the road, keep in mind it comes with like a 30 day warranty and they covered it with no questions asked. I think dealerships can make a lot of things get "pushed through " if they give a shit.....

Good luck

To my knowledge KTM warranty in the U.S. and Canada is one year which covers pretty much everything. In other country's warranty is longer. It all depends what you country's government has specified as a minimum warranty time. KTM only warranties as long as they are forced to.

Copied and pasted from KTM Warranty Statement:

"PERIOD OF WARRANTY FOR 2016 MODEL KTM MOTORCYCLES SOLD IN THE U.S.A...

RC 390, 390 Duke, 690 Enduro R, 690 Duke, 1190 Adventure R, 1190 RC8 R, 1290 Super Duke R:
Duration: 12 months from date of purchase or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Limitations: The warranty on the RC 390, 390 Duke, 690 Enduro R, 690 Duke, 1190 Adventure R, 1190
RC8 R, 1290 Super Duke R can be transferred to subsequent owners within the stated warranty period.
Applies to: RC 390, 390 Duke, 690 Enduro R, 690 Duke, 1190 Adventure R, 1190 RC8 R, 1290 Super Duke R..."

"PARTS COVERED BY THE WARRANTY
This warranty covers only the engine, frame and swingarm. No other components of the motorcycle are covered by any
warranty, expressed or implied and are sold “as is”..."

I did not copy and paste the sections pertaining to other adventure, race, or dirt model KTM bikes. I could find no mention at all of the SDGT.

I'm dumbfounded they don't cover everything for a year. How would you like to buy one and three weeks later the instruments have to be replaced at the owners cost?

This has apparently changed.

U.S.

Indeed it does say "This warranty covers only the engine, frame and swingarm." Some what of a game changer.
Going to dealer this weekend and will be asking. My 1290 GT my be the last KTM I buy.

Talked to dealer today. Says no real changes other than for us the 1290 GT in Canada warranty is 24 months rather 12. His opinion was the warranty is "bumper to bumper" for duration. Said "description on KTM's web site is legal jargon".

Seems to me that "legal jargon" would be ample grounds to legitimately deny warranty coverage for ANY repair other than frame, engine and swingarm. Suppose your ABS pump was defective? Or your multi-function unit (display)? Or a crack developed in a wheel?

Haven't had a look at my owners manual, but I suspect the limited warranty mentioned above might be for race track usage. My GT has 2year (40k kms(?) from memory).

I had the Brembo rotors replaced at 7k kms with no arguments (warrantee).

Naturally the catch is all service work has to be completed as per the manual by an authorised KTM service agent........ ;) .........which suits me as this is one high tech mother I don't want to fumble around with other than basic maintenance like oil and filter...... Seems like the most Japanese of the Euro bike brands so far.......everything according to the maintenance schedule.......except for the Italian connection (Brembo  ).

I reckon you'll be covered for the works.....not that you'll need much....but nice to have the backing
