Top box carrier max load?

Post by pk1 » Tue May 22, 2018 1:05 am

Does anybody know the recommended max load for the top box carrier?
I’ve done a trip with top box full 48 ltr and also fairly heavy bag strapped on top, seems to be a fair bit of flex on the carrier arms .
Was just a bit worried about hitting a pothole, if it would cope with the weight.
Hopefully doing the same again this weekend just a bit concerned, Im over loading it?
As the side boxes are so much smaller than the Hepco Becker ones I had on the smt, I’m having to put much more on the top box.
Any info would be appreciated.
Due to the design of the side cases I can’t strap bags on top of them as I used to on the smt,no where for the straps to go round.
Cheers
Paul

You need to carry less shit, its a motorcycle, not a camper van.
2016 1290GT-remus link and muffler, 2010 Black 1200 Multistrada full Termi system with mapping, 2005 SMR 640, full Titanium system, Mikuni flatside racing carb, 2 sets of wheels, 18 litre tank, and a nice soft seat.

I believe the capacity of maximum weight for these top cases is arround 8 to 9 kgs or just 20 lbs. The Shad 48 liter case has a maximum weight capacity of 8 kgs ( http://www.shad.es/en/shad-usa/products ... m/c17r156/ ). Best,

Doc :) :)

The standard seems to be 10 kg, the racks for both my MT10 and Multistrada were both rated at that. Which seems to tally with Gary's post above, the box itself is a couple of kg.

Cheers pk1,

I usually carry no more than 10kg of stuff in the top box. If you need to carry heaps, then have a look at the SW Motech web site. There is an alternative side case rack that allows Givi/Hepco Becker/etc etc bags to be fitted. It looks robust and would let you run much bigger normal shaped (ie more rectangular) cases that could take most of the heavy stuff and be easier to pack and lock on.

I nearly opted for this as I have Givi E41 cases which are far superior to the KTM (Shad) 30Ltr angular cases, but I went with the flash OEM system. OEM cases are about 90cm wide, but the Motech rack and say, 40Ltr cases would be about 105cm wide....... not too bad if you really need the capacity ;) .

Cheers Dave.
I've come up with another solution, I subscribed to Mcn and got a set of oxford soft panniers 45lts free👍.
I'm going to mount these on top of the original panniers as these seem solid.
I've tested on the drive so far with the wife sitting on the back, everything seemed ok .
Going touring in 2 weeks so this will give her the side boxes and tank bag for clothes.etc.
As I can get all the camping gear in these new bags and the tent in the top box. Oh and lightweight foldable Chairs in a bag on top of the top box.😂
I did think about other boxes but I like how the oem ones look and attach, also for filtering traffic.

Cheers
Paul

11 days 3k miles wife says its comfier than the smt.
Also the mpg is much better 46mpg i only managed about 39 on the smt.
If you check my fully loaded post Brett you will see just how much i loaded her up😱weather was amazing and the bike was faultless.
Ive since changed the front sprocket to a 16tooth and i think its so much better to ride when touring it will sit at 70mph in 6th and 30mph in 4th withoutbthe judder.
Cheers

Just remembered i blew a fues trying to use an air compresser of the 12v power supply? Seems to be too much of a drain on it. Tried again just to check blew again so wont do that again lol but apart from that i think the bike is amazing. Suspension in comfort mode and power on street and the wife says its so comfy.

Arrrgh....... I should have been the fifth Gt there (Morgan Park).... but I had to watch the racing on TV as I still don't have the green light to drive or ride........ :x (heart surgery survivor..... long story.....still recovering  ..... yawn..... am i there yet.... ).

I put the 40 tooth rear sprocket on as it is only a 15min home job and puts the revs into the sweet spot for smooth riding and lets me use 6th on the highways.... but the 16t will also work... Gt motor loves to rev ;) .

For really serious two up touring I'd go for the Motech/Givi rack and outfit it with the adapter kit for whatever cases you need as the oem cases are only 30ltr and need to be unstressed/loaded carefully to stay closed without a stress gap....... a few extra cm's width isn't going to affect the Gt when loaded up for two+ traveling.... and there are lots of nice cases like Givi Trekka's which have a top access hatch so you don't need to fully open the pannier to get something out. Hmmm, soft panniers could also be lighter/more flexible and might act as an airbag if the bike slips over in a paddock (cases tend to shatter :( ).

Cheers all
