Possible Defect - 1290GT Lower Coolant Hose

Post by Aussie Dave » Sun Mar 19, 2017 3:14 am

G'day G-Terror's...... didn't get out for a ride this morning so I messed about noting frame/engine/key # and spotted my coolant level was below the Min mark......ok, out with the manual and read how-to, then top up to Max mark as specified (prob should have used the min mark....but the manual states 'MAX').

So, I was wondering why the coolant hadn't been topped up at the 1000k/620m service - I figure it was probably checked but assumed to be correct as it was midway up the visible catch tank panel.....the max mark is only visible if the orange panel c/w corner lamp is removed to reveal the tank filler cap. So now the inspection window is all pink - the actual level is covered by the bodywork......

Noticed the lower coolant hose - see photo - must have a look at other GT's on way to work.......doesn't look right......hose appears malformed, or damaged. Not sure if it leaks.......will mention to dealer tech's.

Dave, the KTM engines are very difficult to bleed out all the air from the system, you need to lift the front wheel about 2 feet off the ground to do a proper air bleed. mine was also low after 500Ks, i brought the correct coolant, its Motorex M3.0 (pink lettering) you remove the right side panel, (throttle side) a bit tricky as the cornering lights are attached. easy once you have done it a few times, cap under neath.

Cheers mate - done that - that's how I know where the 'max' mark is hiding from view..

I just topped up with demineralised water as it was only approx 150cc to fill.

If my hose is a bad one, they will have to redo the coolant and I'll get some M3.0 for future top ups ( I like a good 50/50 mix in alloy motors).

I was loosing coolant from the overflow tube when hot. Took it in 3 times, from what I gleaned from these pages, I asked them to replace radiator cap- all seems well.

Cheers Chaps....... I ended up siphoning 100cc put to put the level smack on the "min" mark so I could easily monitor it (book prob has a typo anyway)- and I spoke to the dealer service guys ( the KTM expert is away this week-have to arrange an inspection.....even though its just a coolant hose like on most bikes..... ).

I sneaked a peek at some 1190 & 1290SA & GT's and all their hose's were pristine as expected - so it is just mine that looks like the hose pipe machine has scalped it during manufacture.......a pity an Austrian assembly specialist didn't notice the poorly formed hose while installing and clamping it into place.......Dooohh! :P

So, it has held together till now, and with shite weekend weather, it is looking like my plan to have 5000kms up by end of April is under pressure (stalled at 1500km :( ).....I wanted to change the oil & filter just prior to a 3,000km week long tour into NewSouthWales in May, but I might have to settle for a re-bled coolant system and thorough test in April.....dang...there goes another plan........lucky I'm not a project engineer eh

All part of the fun!

Ok, dealer guys took a photo and emailed it to KTM Aus.......but it can be replaced with minimal spillage of coolant so what will be will be....it's probably really only cosmetic, but I've never seen a hose 'trimmed' like this from the factory......weird!

If your GT is loosing coolant, it may be some hose clamps need a tighten up, next suspect would be the rad cap.

Could be the system needs proper bleeding if it hasn't settled to a constant level like all other water cooled bikes and cars......anyway.....I'm keeping an eye on mine. ;).....seems ok since the one and only top up last week.
