So I've now done a couple hundred miles with the 40t rear sprox fitted, and I'm very surprised the difference 2 teeth make, the bike will even sit @ 60 in 6th gear with no issue, in 5th @ 30 mph if you wind the throttle on it will pull instantly, it is now super smooth when town riding and constant 30 mph runs through villages and towns are so much easier when trying to maintain this speed.

However when you wind the throttle on feck me, it's quick really pulling so hard, you have to use the throttle sparingly, i was able to sit in 4th and ride the torque through some fast twisties for several miles and it was so much fun and there's a lot more engine breaking, squirting corner to corner allows you to stay off the brakes now with the additional engine braking, one thing I won't be doing is turning off all the safety features with the 40t fitted because I'll dump the bike in the hedgerow if I do. RPM is slightly higher however rather than Chasing the gears thro the box you can leave it one for longer, 4th is ideal for this now.

The bike is really amazing and I love this engine and now the gearing is spot on but it ain't for a novice, through the valleys of the Peak District winding the throttle on the soundtrack from the induction raw reminded me of rolling thunder....I'm in love again.

I just did a 1300km (err, whatsthat inn UK speaks....812 smiles) over the weekend, and even though my motor has 3500kms up (2187m) it still struggles to hold 6th if the speed drops under 110k's on a slight uphill......of course it's super easy to drop a cog but your experience with the 40t rear = the way to go!

My donk now hold's 4th cog while cruising through towns at 60kph (35mph) in standard trim, but I only use 5th at legal-ish touring speeds (100-110kph......60-70mph) except on the very smooth flat motorway where 6th is just ok if there is a tail wind.... :lol: otherwise I'm tapping down as soon as I reach an incline or hit headwinds.

So.....now we know what to spend our $ on...... :)

Any revs below 4500, the 1290 struggles in 6th gear, its just too lean, once i did the o2 sensor removal and dongle plug fit, wow the engine will easy ride in 6th, even at 4000 revs, and pulls from 4500 no sweat, and around town in sport mode its now a pussy cat.

It astonishes me that they can get the bike to run so well with mediocre pump gas when I assume it must be running pretty lean to meet emissions regulations.....very clever. The two engine related mods that would tempt me are getting the air/fuel ratio closer to the optimum and lowering the gearing by going +2 on the rear sprocket, but I'm going to hold off on all mods to the bike until it's run OK in its standard trim for a while.

I've been planning a ride this August from Texas to California and joining friends there for a ride up the West coast of the US to Oregon, and then back to Texas. In total this trip will be about 5000 miles/ 8000km and take a month (I'm retired :D ). I bought the SD-GT back in February to have plenty of time to get it set up the way I want for this trip and would have made those mods already, but so far the bike has only averaged 450miles/730km between failures and I can't risk having the dealers disown it.

ps: Does "DaveNZ" mean you come from New Zealand?

In 2014 I was lucky enough to visit New Zealand for 6-weeks and agree that its a bikers paradise! My wife and I did 3-weeks touring and hiking on both Islands then she had to go home to work and I was joined by two motorcycling friends and we hired three bikes from Enduro motorcycles in Auckland and did another three weeks riding from there down as far as Invercargill and every road we could find in between. What an amazing place. The people were great everywhere we went, there is so much to see and learn, and its got some of the best motorcycling roads I've seen anywhere in the world. You're a lucky guy!

Our roads are varied, and thats why bikes like the GT and the multistrada are popular here, well the whole KTM range is popular here, Enduro bikes would be a great choice as theres so many gravel roads through the back country, and the mountain passes, I've done 5 South Island trips on my Multistrada, none on the GT yet, but it will happen, the Burt Monroe Rally has been shifted to February (instead of November) much nice time of the year down there, so that could be the GTs turn down there . Lindus Pass-Arthers Pass-Haast Pass-Hamner Springs road, The road from Queenstown to Wanaka, and Queenstown town to Glenorchy. (Lord of the Rings country), the Catlands, and a favourite the road to the Milford Sound through the Homer Tunnel. these are great tarsal (asphalt) roads for the likes of the GT. I'm so glad you got to sample some of our roads and scenery Allan, good on you.

I'll report back after getting some time on her

Hey AllanP - Some great roads out in Big Bend country isn't there - I've done several trips all over the area over the last 30 years. Last one was on my 690 Enduro and we did a lot of off road riding (dirt & gravel roads)

Congratulations on the new bike and nice to have someone else from Texas on the board. I'm only a road rider but Big Bend is a favorite place of mine. Its a bit of a journey to get there even from Austin but I love the landscape and the roads and Hwy118 south of Alpine is one of my favorite roads anywhere. There are parts of that road that I stop and do over and over again just for the joy of it.

Let me know if you ever get down to the Texas Hill country or plan on taking a trip to Big Bend again. Its easy to tempt me back there too :D

A couple of updates.

3500 miles/5,600kms on the bike now and I just picked it up from the dealers where they replaced the torque limiter on the starter because of the loud noises we heard sometimes when it was started. They also cleaned the fork tube oil seals to in an attempt to eliminate the slight oil weep and examined the coolant system. The bike has used all of the fluid in the overflow tank since I bought it requiring me to top it up, which is more than on any other bike I've ever owned. The temperature has always remained stable at about midway on the temperature gauge so the radiator appears to have remained full. They checked the coolant system out but found no indications of a leak or overflowing so I'm assuming that I will juts have to top it up every 1000miles/1600kms.

While the bike was in the shop they also tightened up the steering head bearings. I didn't ask for this but appreciate them being pro-active and was looking forward to trying the bike after it was done hoping it might help with the clonking over bumps or the fork rattling when I pull to a stop. I rode it for about 60 miles down a road I'm familiar with but didn't notice any improvement. It actually seemed more clonky but I'm guessing this is just my attention being drawn to it again after becoming used to it.

I really can't fault the dealership for their support with the bike since I bought it. Starting again, lets see if I can make it to 10k (miles or kms) at a stretch without an issue.

My 16 sd gt does the same thing. I was chocking the clunky frontend to the semi-active suspension. Mainly feel it when kinda heavy on front brake as the forks dive. Haven't tried other settings yet. But havent found anything loose head has no play.Wonder if the super adventure does it also. I believe it has the same electronic setup.

my 15 sdr has the clunking in the front end too. had it checked 3 times. i think its the headlight assembly. but cant find the noise in the garage.

My Super Adventure, only 350 miles, has a clonk on the front if I stop and let the forks bounce back up with the brakes on. When I next brake there is a clonk I was assuming it was just moving the pads upwards in the callipers and then reseating them. That's the only time it does it.

My 2016 & 1/2 1290 GT now has 1100 mi, a dead horn and the addition of a front end clunk when nearing a full stop. (Clunk easily replicable at a stop light. Mery by rocking forward and grabbing front brakes)
The horn is dead as a doornail, regardless of temperature. Though, when it first operated, it was prety anemic from the factory.
Installing the heated seat created a fail message that has lasted through the dealer "fix".
And yet, the bike is still amazing. Having had several Beemers, it took a lot to draw me away from the roundel flock.
I loved the seemingly limitless horse power of my K1300$ and enjoyed the comfort, handling and versatility of my R1200R WC (Not 'water closet..' btw). The GT seems to be close to the best of both worlds. (Although a bit buzzy in the Bars..)
Outstanding handing, top shelf performance and futuristic looking.
If I could only route the cannister sound facing forward, I might be able to live without a horn!
Im lucky enough to live in Los Angeles with a couple legendary roads: Malibu Canyon, where people get a great ride in and have a place to pose with thier bikes. And the Angeles National Forest, where riders can really test thier metal.
This GT eats sportbikes as a snack. (But to be honest, even my boxer made mince meat of the vast majority of LA sport-bike squids. Only now they never see it coming!

Yep.....just turned 5000kms of age.....nil oil usage, nil failures to proceed (groan...now I've jinxed myself :roll: ), all smiles from me.....and hasn't that WP softened up nicely.....I'm now using 1+gear and street damping when I go touring.....and it's just nice - comfy but well controlled. :)

Just changed my oil and it appears these dry sump designs are quite gentle on engine oil.....I was expecting to see my Motorex 4T semi-synth 15w50 come out all black and thin, but it looked like it really would have lasted till 7,500 kms......(I like to change oils at half manufacturer intervals).....anyway, no harm in removing some new engine filings and putting a new filter and oil in at this early stage......I'll do it again at 10k kms and then let the dealers do the scheduled 15k km service - then I'll conform to just the one 'in-between' selfie service at 22,500kms.... :lol:

Coolant level is static (I set it to the minimum mark so it's easy to inspect), fork seals have stopped weeping (especially after I cross-hatch sanded the grit score marks), hell, I'm even going to give it a run in sport map next time out... :lol: .....it has so much mumbo, I haven't even thought of it till now..... :D
