1st KTM

Post by J biker » Fri Mar 03, 2017 6:47 pm

Hello all, just collected Superduke 1290GT yesterday. Grinning from ear to ear after the ride home, even in the cold.
Been a nearly KTM owner a few times over the years (990 smt, 990 superduke..) but when I saw the first spy shots for the 1290GT knew which bike was for me.
Seem to have owned a lot of bikes and gone from sports, to tourer sports, to flat bar conversions etc. Now KTM have made a bike that combines all I have been looking for. Happy days.

Awesome JBiker
, congrats on your GT, bugger the sports bikes, I've moved through to the sporty fast tourers, I've had a multistrada 1200 for 5 years, plus a quite a few sports bikes also, i had the 1290R then traded it for the GT. once run in the 1290 is a fantastic engine.

Ive still got my Multistrada, couldn't bare to part with it, plus its travelled over 70thouKs, not worth much now, and i still get a big grin every time i ride it. Im off on it next Wednesday with the wife for 5 days, going on an IMOC ride (italian Motorcycle Owners Club) over NZs east coast, gunna be hot, they have had temps in the high 20s, and low 30s. looking forward to getting back on the multi, been mainly riding the GT, trying to wear out those horrible OEM Angels they come with.

Resized a picture so can show it off. Since collection have fitted a Puig screen. Just need a radiator guard and crash bungs.
Out on the bike on Saturday to Hartside (nice road..) in not great conditions, still got road salt in places. Anyway, got back to find already at the edge of the tyres. Confidence inspiring bike. Cant wait for dry, warm roads..

Hey, you've got my GT.......give it back,......no wait, it's ok, GT safe in garage......phew

I'm the same......sports bikes lost me when the R1 bone shaker replaced the fairly comfortable FZR Genisis 5 valve I was using for rather quick touring back in the noughties......and I take too much gear with me when I go away....so I need cases or racks etc and the sporties just can't do that anymore.....unless they are made by KTM ;)

I also kept a favourite.......my CBR1100XX with Ohlins front springs and the lovely gold shockie on the back. It ran Givi cases and top box when I was two up touring, had 400km safe range and loved corners with bumps...

Couldn't part with such a perfect bike.......and it has 130,000kms on it so no one wants it even though they are good to 200k kms B4 a rebuild.......so it can talk to the GT while I'm asleep......and give it the heads up on my faults and weirdnesses....

Got the miles up today, 1st service on Friday coming. Gave the bike a couple of little bursts (within rev range for running in) impressive! Lifting over crests in the road in 5th gear, my kind of bike :)

I can confirm, the future IS Orange! Front forks even starting to bed in like people said, what a bike...

Yes sirree......and it gets better and better with miles......I am just back (well, shower & coffee 1st) from a 440km Saturday ride - on the slog home on the highway (using cruise control) my 1937km (1200miles) GT was telling me I was getting 22km/Litre (13.7miles per Ltr.....which = 62miles per UK gallon or 52 US smiles per gallon).......no wonder the range-o-meter was telling me I was making fuel as I was riding..... ;) (just as well because 95RON in Aus costs almost $1.50/Ltr this weekend. ).

Naturally, earlier in the day, I was only getting 16.something per klick-o-meter while giving it some 9k rpm overtake stick to show my R1200RT mates with a bit of orange tail...

I reckon the suspension is good.....it's a sport bike crossover, so the front is soft-ish for a sporty with only 125mm travel, and the rear is quite plush on 'comfort' with 150mm travel (we have a lot of bumps on our secondary roads) - yet, I suspect the dynamic Damping stiffens up with speed, as I thought I noticed the slight 'pogo' effect that some have commented on, absent at 100k/h on our Aussie back roads. (this is real world sport touring....not 'hey look at me' take a photo stunt riding). If needed there is street and sport, so all styles should be covered.

What a blast.......and the grin I had when the change light flashed 'angry red' at me.......oh yeah, loosening up nicely......amazing gearbox......I'm rapt.. :D

Ps RT driver commented the stock GT sure made a bark as I blitzed past - my excuse was 'just finishing off the run-in process'...... (fek me, this thing in standard form really really goes hard..... :D ).
