help it just digested all the oil

Post by nlovie » Fri Sep 11, 2015 9:41 am

So my 990 adventure just spat its oil out the ex pipe
no warning signs, no revving hard i.e. i'm pritty easy on the engine
it just coughed spluttered and disapeared behind a cloud of oily smoke - now dumped at the side of the road awaiting pick up
before I go and do something rash - i'm thinking this must be a major piston or ring failure
any sugestions ?

Edited after doing some homework = balance shaft seal - plenty info about this on the web, thank you very much sir

Open up the air box & make sure it has not dumped a whole lot of oil down the throttle bodies.

Lets take one step at a time, open the air box up & let us know if it is dripping oil & we will go from there.

If the air box is dry pull both spark plugs out & look to see which one is oiled up.

ok - there is oil wetting - marginal - on the throttle body bores, however you can see oil / petrol mix sitting around the inlet valves of the front cylinder - the rear cylinder plug is petrol wet
I think the tell tail here is obvious oil tarnishing on the front injector body below the throttle plate - i.e. being fed by the breather hose
it took less that 1/2 litre to get the oil stick to max - actually i've now over filled her

OK both plugs out - good compression - and i've calmed down and put away my shrinking wallet  I'm a Scotsman - you rarely see such a thing in public

so its pumped some oil into the airbox via the breather - why ? - time to go web search

and there is the very obvious answer - balance shaft seal I need to now go gather up all my toys that I spat out my pram, -
I was in a bit of a strop this morning
I had to be somewhere for work
I have a grating sore tooth
And i'm stuck by the road side
turned out work wasn't so important - it never is - is it
I've bagged an appointment with the dentist on Monday :(
and a balance shaft seal and timing casing gasket is on its way 8-)

and the day is yet young
