SMR or 1190 ADV??

Post by Roadhawg » Tue Apr 14, 2015 3:01 pm

So guys. I need some wisdom here.

I bought my SMT a few years back, I kind of actually wanted the SMR, but went for the "sensible" SMT. I loved the bike but the nag for the sexier SMR was always in the back of my mind.

Then 3 weeks ago a beaut of a 2012 SMR came up for sale at my local dealer. Arrows pipes and just abotu every Rizoma extra on it. 10k kms on the clock. Hell, this was my chance, I stuck my SMT up for sale.

couple weeks pss and I find a buyer, the moment the deal was agreed upon I called the dealer with an offer on the SMR.....
...."Sorry sir we just sold that bike this morning." :x :x

I always wanted an ADV but thought they were far to expensive to afford. Missing out on the SMR kind of made me take another look at them though and some 2013 models are within reach. Still expensive though.

After going and testriding an ADV R, a buddy with an SMR decides to sell his. So now I'm in a quandary. Do I stick with the initial plan, and get an SMR and keep my monhtly payments much the same.....Or do I go nuts, shout "YOLO" and go sign for an 1190?

I ride mainly road. Ive probably down 300m of dirt on the SMT...thats the extent of my dirt experience on 2 wheels (Drive a fairly modified wrangler offroad plenty though). How is the Std ADV compared to the SMT? Still fun?

Can you dick about on the ADV without it feeling like a train? I must admit test riding the R it felt insanely light. But it didnt have the....I dunno...."Aggression" of the 990. I got back on my SMT and loved the ride home, knowing it would be my last

Thoughts?

I switched from the smt to the adv r, best thing ever, i think the feeling you describe is having to hang on the throttle to screw the smt and wring its neck whereas the adv is effortless, turn the TC off and it makes a little more manic, does take more effort to corner but ive had no issue reaching the tyre edges two up on it at all.

Riding back from Devon this weekend and i was having so much fun, switching engine modes on the go etc. and playing with the abs and tc settings.
Then there was the motorway stretches, dreaded on the smt, no problem on the adv, just sit back and cruise along.

I had an SMT and now have a non R Adventure. Love it AND even though I thought the SMT was a great bike, I think I would be disappointed going back to an SMT now after owning an RC8

Thanks guys.

All the South African Adventures (non R) come with the EDS standard....Have their been any issues with the system? It does kinda scare me in that it seems like a lot to go wrong once the warranty is over.

Good thing is that the 2013s got an extra year of warranty here, so buying one now will mean a year left of warranty.

I've not heard of any failures in the EDS from my web travels on various forums

Why not the 1290 SDR? It even has the dinky little soft saddlebags like your beloved SMT!

Thanks.

I'm trying to find out if the 1190 I've found had the MSC retrofit, coz if I'm spending all that money I want the full package man.

Will hopefully get a ride on a demo std 1190 this week so ill at least have some reference.

Once you've ridden it, you'll buy it :D

IMO the 1190 power and sound is addictive, even with standard exhaust, and the handling is light and predictable.

Good luck.

Got a ride on a brahs new adventure today, and then wrote this. Don't feel like rewriting it so I copied and pasted. Please excuse the profanity, it's kind of par for the course on the forum I wrote it on
Rode the 1190 std Adventure (for non KTM okes, the adventure, but with less offroad suspension and wheels)

*Disclaimer* I am not bitching. Just putting thoughts down on the interwebz where others can see and provide any input they feel they would like to.

Firstly. It's fuck off comfortable. My only complaints are the that bars are a little reachy for me and the screen buffets my particular helmet. If i hunch down just 1 inch it's quiet as a church at 130km/h though.

I started off in street mode again and again it just felt really too sanitized, distant.....wooly......that started to get annoying in less than a couple blocks. Fuck the salesman, Im trying sport. Pull over, switch over to sport (which also puts the damping into sport setting automagically which is cool). Pull off again.....MUCH fucking better. Now it feels like the throttel is actually connected to the engine, not having it's inputs digitally transcoded and then getting emailed to the fucking thing. The TC still gets involved (the bike had like 3kms on it so i guess even the tyres were still slippy from being new) and you can feel it surging a little when it intervenes in your inputs, but not nearly as much as street. Street mode is retarded, I'd never use it, cant imagine how shit rain mode must be, unless it is in fact raining.

Ok....I'm starting to see what this bike is now. I ended up doing a couple more laps of the route than I initially thought and it seems the more you ride the thing, the more you start to gel with it. I realised I was shifting at like 6000/7000 rpm so I started actually opening it up and above 8k it is properly fucking fast. That midrange did feel a bit disappointing after the 990 though. The 990 just feels more linear where as this one has very little and then fucking explodes after 7000rpm.

I think the 990 maybe makes you hyper sensitive to throttle response being that it is so twitchy (mine anyway) so having this ride by wire thing feels a bit strange. I'm more confused than ever.....Possibly leaning back towards the SMR now. I think the biggest draw is that the 1190 will be far more useable in far more instances than the hooligan machine.

Still not bitching, theyre both awesome bikes and I am fairly sure I'll be ecstatic owning either one.

Thank you.

At the end of the day mate, you've got to choose the bike that suits what you are going to use it for most of the time. Seems like you are more of a hooligan type than ride out type. I do agree, Sport mode is ballistic and imo, anybody that wants more than the raw 150hp this kick out in that mode spends too much time on too straighter, too wider roads looking at the tarmac. I mainly ride in Street mode as I'm normally looking over the fence or wall at the views and scenery. The odd crest to pop a wheelie over keeps me happy. I only use sport when the red mist descends which is very rare. I love my 1190 Adventure. I knew why and how I ride a bike before buying it and this does almost exactly what I want it too. Hooligan riding wasn't its main task, although, for me anyway, its hooligan enough when I want it to be.

I nearly bought a 2013 990 SDR from Jim Aim before I bought this as I love the look and the Kudos I think they have, but they'd sold it before I decided to have it. Looking back, it was a lucky thing they did :)
