Need recommendation for good naked bike helmet

Post by megalord » Tue Apr 18, 2017 1:22 pm

Got a schuberth s2 helmet and my neck is starting to feel sore next day. Possibly its just an adjustment issue but the schuberth is quite a heavy helmet and it has way too much air flow for a fast naked bike. I suspect its a sports tourer helmet, for bikes with a fairing.

Can someone recommend a light weight aerodynamic helmet with not too much ventilation?

I like my Arai Signet Q. Hard to compare anything else to Arai for comfort and build quality imho.

In all seriousness you just need to toughen up a bit.
Even if there was such a thing as a "sports touring helmet for bikes with a fairing", which there isn't, the difference is going to be a couple hundred grams, max.

Go buy a helmet that actually fits your head shape properly, and go back to your riding technique: pin the tank with your knees, hold it in place with your core, and keep your chest, shoulders and neck a bit looser. Then you'll stop getting a sore neck...

I also have a Shoei RF-1100 Merciless that is comfortable. Shell size on Shoei is larger, no heavier but is bigger. Very stable an a little quieter but I like Arai's better.

+1

Had a standard sport bike helmet (Kabuto FF 5V) before I purchased the Defiant and it would keep wanting to lift at speed, resulting in a sore neck. The Defiant is comfortable and stays put at speed.

Highly Recommended

I'll never buy another Shoei after the trouble I've had with visor alignment and fogging on my GT Air.
The only things that matter a bit more on a naked over other sorts of bikes are noise levels and you won't get away with cheapies.

I've never had stability problems with any lid I've worn on a naked but some are more aerodynamic than others and the wind blast can make some feel heavier. I have a cheap AGV K3 which I bought as a spare. Its a perfect fit but on the SDR or the Ducati it makes my jaw ache at prolonged high speed. Its fine on the SMT which has a tall screen. And if you're going to be riding all day noise does matter on a naked.

I do quite a lot of bike miles a year on nakeds and not just short blasts. Noise is the big one for me. Other than that it just needs to fit, be screwed together properly and have a visor that works.
I'm waiting to see what the new Schuberth R2 is like.

Shoei xspirit 2 for me, easily as good and comfortable as my old Arai, and the noise is not a problem if you wear earplugs, + the pin lock visors are brilliant.

Arai defender pro is an excellent helmet. According to RevZilla's review, it was designed for naked bike usage.

Without ear plugs there is a lot of wind noise, but My ear plugs take care of that.

I'm looking too. I love my arai xd4. But I'm running it with the peak off and it's still freaking loud with ear plugs.

I went with HJC RPHA 11 PRO and really like it. Extended rides on highway will be better with earplugs. It does really slice through the wind. If I'm really sitting straight up at highway speed, some times I feel a little lift on it from underneath. It does come with a chin guard that may help but I don't have that installed.
This helmet seems to be a great value. I went with solid white.

Gave up waiting for the new Schuberths and just bought an X-lite X-802RR.
XLiteX802RRPuFlatCarbon_Helmet-1.jpg
Having said earlier noise is more crucial on a naked, this helmet is quite noisy on my 1190 Adventure which has a (very effective) 1290 SA screen fitted to it but strangely quiet on the Superduke.
On the Duke in terms of noise this lid is indistinguishable from my old GT Air. But it is much lighter and feels less massive, much cooler because the vents are far more effective and the visibility is better, especially peripheral vision, which combined with its compactness and less mass makes lifesavers much easier in a forward crouch. Well, it is a sports lid..
Just done 1700 miles with it round Wales on the 1190 and it never fogged or leaked. It was loud but when I got home and took the Superdulke out, it was just as quiet as the sports-touring Shoei. Helmets are definitely bike-sensitive and this one clearly suits nakeds very well, upright adventure bikes less so.
Its a very good fit too. If like me you have a Shoei-shaped head, this should be just as comfortable.

The old model X-802R with the mauve lining wasn't as well fitting and had a few rough edges. This new RR version (with green lining) is a league ahead and its a different lid altogether. Well up there with anything in this price bracket. Definitely worth considering for a naked. Looks the biz too.

I replaced my Shoei with this 802rr carbon. This helmet is comfortable and light. I have found it to be quieter than my Shoei. I wasn't 100% sold on the Xlite in the shop but bought it anyway, very happy with that decision.

Sold my Shoei and picked up a new Arai Signet Q on ebay and a great deal. Imho an Arai is just the best out. Fit is 2nd to none for me. Finish is perfect on them. They just know how to build great helmets.

I use an AGV Pista GP Carbon limited edition , only £1100 the best and most comfy helmet I've ever had, it's not cheap but one has appearances to keep up!!!

Another recommendation for the Arai Defiant. It was designed for naked bikes.

My recommendation too, though here and probably the UK it's called "Rebel".
