What is this leak?

Post by xaotikos » Mon May 23, 2016 12:50 pm

Hi, Is this coolant at the right of the engine? it a greenish fluid.... Have anyone seen this before?
I have seen the same at the past and the dealer just tightened the bolts around a bit. Coolant level is OK, I had a major service (15K km) around 2000km ago
Thanks

That color would almost have to be. The device just to the right is part of the cooling system (water pump I think). So seems reasonable. Look up the parts diagram or a parts list for the water pump and you can identify it. In any case, torque to spec. A minor leak will not likely show in your tank unless left a long time.
Mods: arrow exhaust, 2nd flies removed, plugged air injection caps, JC30-80 air filter, 44T sprocket, 80w high beam, short levers, weighted bar ends, Rox risers, remapped ecu, heated grips, horn, radiator screen, crash bar, skid plate, backrest.

I left it today to the suspension mechanic for a suspension service as the front was feeling all over even on sport settings and had a lot of stiction.
I will ask him to torque them on spec as i dont have a torque wrench :(

I've learned the hard way that if you own a motorcycle, you need a torque wrench.

A Yamaha Virago/XV I broke part of the cam chain base plate bolts boss due to too much torque (7 #/ft rating) and a high tech Harley Davidson I ate the cylinder when I did not go back with the proper torque wrench (it was a 1942 WW2 flat head -- had the high compression 5:1 heads). It was interesting though -- it still ran with a 1/4" slot on each side of the bore. Just made a rattle. The slot? Caused by the piston keeper recess melting out and allowing the piston pin to move left and right.

Check your hose clamps. I had to snug mine down twice during the first 1K miles.

It's coolant. You might find the water pump seal is on the way out. Keep an eye on your coolant level.

With this bike in particular! EVERYTHING is made of butter...It will shear, strip or otherwise make you cry if you take the 'Good 'n Tighty' approach. To put it in other terms, ahem, every fastener is "precision calibrated". I've Helicoiled my last fastener on the LC4 engine, I treat it as if it were a delicate watch and Threadlock everything. Austria meant to give us the lightest weight liter engine of its kind in production, and as rugged and reliable as it is, it is held together with ticky-tacky!

Must be something in the air because I've got exactly the same leak this morning. Will have to check the torque when I get home.

I have two, as one doesn't cover the range needed.
