2012 No Tachometer Odometer Reset

Post by wilmotriverside » Sat Sep 26, 2015 7:43 pm

I left the key on on my 2012 SMT. Battery totally drained itself. I tried using a jump box but that didnt work. I then made the bonehead move of trying to jump it with my truck. That did not do it. It only kicked the engine over like a quarter turn. So I put the battery charger on it for an hour and that started it fine. The problem I had was the tach does not work anymore. It sweeps when you turn the key on but once started it doesnt move. The display also suddenly read in Kph so I had to change it to MPH. No big deal. The Odometer and tripometer all read 00000. The bike had over 9000 miles on it. I kinda like that but I have no tachometer. What can I do myself to fix this? Did I fry it out? Do I get the orange key out? I don't care if the milage goes back on I just want my tach back!

Try disconnecting the battery lead from the bike & retest, if that does not fix it you might have spiked the dash.

I've disconnected the battery and left it disconnected overnight. While I did this I charged the battery to full charge. Reconnected and nothing. I assume a spiked dash is a fried dash that needs to be replaced?

There is a procedure when jump starting to prevent amperage spiking unless you are using electronic jumper cables, with both motors turned off connect jumper cables to both battery's, start the second vehicle vehicle hold revs for 10 min at 3000rpm this will start to add a charge to the flat battery, start the bike after the 5 min then turn off the second vehicle leave the bike running for a further 5 min with the cables & second battery still connected.

After the last 5 min turn the bike off & remove the jumper cables there should be enough AMPS in the battery to start the bike now.

wilmotriverside: What is the voltage of your truck ? 24V or 12V ? And when you jumped it, you connected - to - and + to + right ?

BTW: I refuse to jump anyone's car that has a flat battery. I keep a battery boaster in the car for this reason (sacrificial).

The truck is 12v. Is there any one thing that fried the tach or do I have to replace the whole cluster? Should I take it to the dealer to plug in to check for any codes? or is that not even a option?

Does anyone have any comments on replacing the dash? If fried the tach by jumping it do you think the dash is bador is there something else that could of fried? Willing to buy a dash but don't want to waste the money if it's something else. Thanks

Take it to the dealer so they can hook it up on the scan tool.
