Not running smoothly

Post by Pete » Mon Oct 07, 2013 7:37 pm

Hi
I've just bought a second hand SMT. "This is my first time so be gentle!"
Love the bike and have been lusting after one for most of the year. The only thing that is bugging me is the engine 'surging & dying' on a constant throttle. Say I'm in traffic waiting for a chance to overtake and maybe doing 40mph in 3rd, the engine isn't smooth.
I've taken it into a KTM dealer and they say this is normal for this bike but also recommend a power commander as the solution.
Has anyone else experienced the same issue? Does the power commander resolve it (at £500+ fitted I should hope it does!) and are there other options?
Thanks
Pete

Removing the secondary butterflies from the throttle bodies improves the snatchy throttle. Remapping will smooth it further. Look at Technical and the Power Commander and Tune Ecu thread.

Do you know if any mods have been done to the bike as more info will get you some better advice.

Thanks Craig
The bike has had Akropovik pipes fitted - but the dealer old me that the mapping has been changed accordingly

These bikes run fairly smoothly from 3k onwards. If it's rough after that there's something not right IMO

Welcome to the site Pete, I was in the same position as you when I first got my smt last year. I would recommend doing some mods and loading one of Kevs maps via tune ecu, you won't believe the difference this makes to the throttle response. As Craig has said everything you need to know is in Kevs mod book, it may seem a bit daunting at first but if you are ok with a set of tools and can use a pc then a few quid on a cable and a couple of hours work will have it sorted.

Kev's mod book.

I don;t run mine much below 4k rpm steady state. It runs smoother and the mileage doesn't seem affected.

But it's no triple or 4 cylinder, so it will never feel that smooth. Try a Buell if you want to feel what rough is.
Mods: arrow exhaust, 2nd flies removed, plugged air injection caps, JC30-80 air filter, 44T sprocket, 80w high beam, short levers, weighted bar ends, Rox risers, remapped ecu, heated grips, horn, radiator screen, crash bar, skid plate, backrest.

Peter, I had the same problem with my 11 plate and the same end cans, BSD in Peterbrough sorted it for me with a custom map it is £300. You can sort it out using the maps available to you for free here. BSD are full of advice on these bike, and will tune the motor to your own requirements.

I've used Kev's mod on my 09 SMT and it was a massive change. Also now that the bike has lossened up a bit it has gotten smoother as well. The dealer must have tightened before they sold the bike to me. But as one of the previous posts said, it's not going to turn into a triple or inline 4. It's a different kind of fun. The bike is much better if you ride it like you mean it.

99% of riders get told you can't make these 990's ride better low down I disagree 100% & can prove it, load one of my maps & try it for yourself.
