Well, i still have the 'old' problem of the drilled through frame, so that's why i have had this done.

Also, without going to debate anything, the overall issues people have had with the sub frames is the rear piece shearing off, another reason for me to do this first. I can see your point with the mounting holes aswell, the one on the right hand side of mine was broken off too... And, as far as i know, it had never had a box mounted. The welder put a small tack on that area, as you can see on one of the pics.

Yeah. As well as the two front mounts completely disintegrating, the rear bit of mine end up like this:

Classic example of metal fatigue. No idea where the missing chunks went to, they were nowhere to be found when I stripped the back end down.

It's almost like the whole thing was designed a bit off, perhaps tension and stress points that weren't thought through.

But hey, as long as I don't lose mine halfway up the Alps now, it's fine by me!

Am I right in thinking that KTM addressed this issue on the post 2012 bikes with a revised subframe?

Is there any way of accurately identify and confirming this?

I have just bought an early 2012 SMT and I plan to mount a topbox but not before I confirm that the subframe is now man enough to take it, or have it strengthened to ensure it is

There were two issues. One affected pre-2011 bikes, and caused the whole subframe to break in two. The other affected all bikes, and caused the topbox/grabrail mount points to break. You'll still have the risk of the latter.
