New to me SMT (three questions)

Squeaky back brake? Hard to control at 30mph/40kph?

New to me SMT (three questions)

Post by H e a d N o r t h » Sun Sep 15, 2019 1:50 pm

Amazing bike! Coming from a 950 Adventure (keeping both for now...)
2011, 38xxxkm, looks entirely stock and in good shape. Have mainly adjusted ergonomics so far.
I took it out for a shake down ride yesterday, rode it on various road types.
It's a blast on twisties and rolling hills!
I knew to expect the snatchy throttle, and I'm actually OK with it.

First question has to do with the instrument cluster, specifically the indicator lights:
-Start up routine seems to go as intended (all indicators light up, including neutral light)
-Once started, I have never seen the neutral light (checked when in neutral)
-Neutral sensor seems OK, since it won't start in gear (not even when clutch is engaged)
Any suggestions?

Question #2
Fuel filler cap is very difficult to get off. There seems to be a conflict between the key-activated pins and the tank hole edge. If there's no wisdom from here on what to do, I may jut try to bend the tank edge to give it a tiny bit more tolerance.

Question #3
Headlight during daylight - is the tiny 'pilot' light (below main bulb) the only light that should be on? High beam works during the day. I have not ridden at night yet, so I don't know if there's a sensor like in some cars that turns low beam on...anyone able to tell me more?

Thanks in advance.

I can only help with question 2.

It's a known issue (although I have never had it on numerous 990 KTMs).

The red part of the filler cap swells. Trim it with a blade and it will be fine.

#3 on my 2011 the low beam is on all the time, so wonder if your. Ulb is the issue.
Good luck changing the bulb though its a sodding nightmare lol, have to take a load of the front off to get to it.

Thanks. That's what I though I'd hear. High and low beam are the same bulb, right?
As for taking off plastics to get to it, I've owned a number of bikes where that's been required.
I may just adjust the high beam downward for now, and do this in the off season (a month or more from now).

Great! I was nervous about bending the tank hole edge. Trimming the red plastic makes more sense.

Interesting...
I realized the previous owner had massively overfilled the oil reservoir. (Good thing it's a dry sump and not as susceptible to overpressure).
So I syringed a bunch of oil out to get it between the marks on the sight glass.
Ever since, the neutral light works as intended, though neutral is a little tougher to find than before.
So, what I surmise is the overfill of oil must have had some effect on the gear position sensor. Weird...
Does that make sense?

If that was it, I have answers to all three questions, all of which will cost me about $15. Awesome.

Good question. The two dealers I went two (first my first 990 and my current bike) always over filled the bikes on services because these engines burn a fair bit of oil in the first 15000km. They did this to prevent return visits if the owner isn't mechanical. I personally like to keep the oil level half way.

So, after a month or so with the bike, my issues...

1. Instrument cluster is still spotty (when the neutral light works or doesn't). Not going to bother with any further investigation on this one, unless something else, related, goes wrong.
2. Fuel filler cap has been trimmed and is all good.
3. Headlight (low beam) resolved by installing a new lamp (damn fairing removal...)

Since then:
4. I've had my clutch go south, but with some mineral oil, a syringe and a little hose, that was corrected without too much drama.
5. Waiting on a set of hard cases I ordered from a guy in the UK (used).
6. Received a set of lowered foot pegs from a guy in CZ, not yet installed.
7. Added a custom front screen cut from an extra one I had laying around.
8. Installed 30mm bar risers.
9. Added a beaded seat cover and some extra foam under it - not satisfied yet - will investigate over the winter.
10. Added a top case (cheap used one) - may swap this out for something else later.
11. Still not thrilled with the snatchy throttle, but may do nothing about that - keeps me alert, that's for sure!
12. Considering some extra lighting, but in no rush - winter is coming and the stock setup (with new lamp) is not bad.
13. Considering a modulating brake light relay.
14. Will definitely replace the anemic horn with something that scares people a little.

Love the bike! Just have to figure out how to ride it without the inner hooligan showing up too often - it's so tempting.
