Where/how can I get another key made for my bike?

Post by razteo » Wed Mar 05, 2014 6:11 am

Sorry, but the more I read about this topic, the less I understand!

I just got a used 2010 SMT with only one black key. That's it, no key card, number, orange key, just one black key.
Where can I get another key made?

Get acquainted with your local dealer.
I am in the process of getting a new gas cap, pre-keyed.
Not going well, but your dealer should be able to help you out.
Or just change the ECU to the older RC8 pre-immobiliser unit.
Probably cheaper to try the dealer first.

Read you manual so you understand the basics prior to going to your dealer. Chances are they don't deal with this issue often enough to be particularly well versed in the right steps to take.
Mods: arrow exhaust, 2nd flies removed, plugged air injection caps, JC30-80 air filter, 44T sprocket, 80w high beam, short levers, weighted bar ends, Rox risers, remapped ecu, heated grips, horn, radiator screen, crash bar, skid plate, backrest.

What I found out from the dealer

This is what the dealer told me I need to do:

1 - Call KTM of North America and ask them to provide me with a KEYCODECARD for my bike. Proof of ownership (they don't now under what form) will be needed, maybe ownership confirmation from DMV as well (pain the butt).

2 - With the KEYCODECARD the dealer will be able to order a key from KTM. The key will be pre-coded by KTM, the dealer will just hand it to me.

3 - The new key should work fine with the bike.

You will need the red key to enable the immobiliser to accept your new key.
As the keys are microchipped, they are also encrypted with a serial number.
The red key enables the immobiliser to store the serial number of a key.
It has only enough registry space to store 4 key serial numbers.
You can delete any keys you do not now own (so that someone can't come and take you ride back). This is a good idea anytime you are missing a key!
Much like changing your PIN or password on accounts.

No idea how you go about getting the correct red key.

&&&&&&&&&&

My dealer copied my drivers license and my registration.
I am the only owner.
I gave them the key code from the card that I got when I bought the bike.
KTM USA told them it is wrong.
Now to scan the card and forward through my dealer to let them tell us what they need.

All to get a properly keyed gas cap.
Just as well to do this now than find out later there is a problem.

Man, I wonder why is so complicated this all process!
To misplace the keys, to sell the bike and not have all the keys & the cards - that happen all the time, why will they make this so complicated??

Orange key & KEYCODECARD

Post by razteo » Mon Mar 10, 2014 4:35 pm

So in other words I need to order from the dealer:

- a new KEYCODECARD (so I can get keys)
- a new ORANGE KEY (I don't have one and I need it to make the new regular key work with the bike). By the way, the new orange key from the dealer, will that work no problem with the bike you think?
- finally, a new KEY

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you.

I had a similar problem. I went to a key specialist and they programmed one off the key I had. Cost 100 euro. Works fine but it isn't a ktm key.

I wonder when I can go here to have that done.

You can also contact these guys, even when you have no keys at all (you need to prove it's yours though, no stolen bikes!)

Thank you. It may be a little difficult to take my bike apart here in California & send the immobilizer & the only key I have to The Netherlands..

I've been looking into this also as I'm in the same situation. Here are my findings.

I've spoken to a few different KTM dealers and have been told that to get a replacement Orange key, I will require a new immobiliser unit. A full lock set (3 barrels, Immobiliser, 2 Black Keys & 1 Orange key) was around £380 + Fitting (ECU needs to be programmed to accept comms from new immobiliser).

I then got put onto these guys (http://www.motomatrix.co.uk/). You can either send them your remaining Black key, which they'll clone and send back for £65. Or send them your immobiliser and they'll send it back with a 1 black and 1 orange key for £225.

I'm gonna go with the second option, but not got around to it yet.

Just another Kudo for SOS Diagnostics in Canby, OR. I bought my SMT used and only got one black key. THe dealer said the only thing they could do was to replace the entire lock set to provide a new full set of keys. At about $600. SOS Diagnostics was able to clone 2 keys for me from only a single black key, at $70 each. I mailed my key and got all three back in about 1 week. Both the clones worked fine. So this seems to be a good option. :)
