WP Upsidedown 4860 rebuild - pretension changed

Post by limeyduffa » Wed Mar 27, 2019 11:34 am

Hi All

Last week, I took my bike into a very reputable racing performance specialist to have the oil and seals replaced on my SMT. They didn't need servicing, but the bike is 7 years old now, so what the hell.

When I picked it up from the specialist, I noticed a few sloppy things that was done to the bike. One of these got sorted out on the spot (as I could not fix it myself). The other two I fixed myself. However, this raised doubts about this companies quality. They were really no better than a dealer to be honest.

My question is, when servicing a front strut, is it normal for the pretension adjustment to need changing ? (out by half a turn ?). In other words, is it possible for a mechanic to accidentally fit a component incorrectly/the wrong way for the pretension to be out 1/2 a turn ?. I figure that an oil and seal change isn't going to change the pretension setting. So, I am worried they have put my struts (or one of the struts) back together incorrectly.

Is this concern incorrect ?. Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers J

Hi Limey

First, I made the service for the WP forklegs by myself last spring, at 54600 km. It was totaly innessecary! The sealings and the inner bushings were like brand new.

I'm not 100% sure what you are asking about, but I guess you needed to adjust the rebound or the compression by halv a turn?

What would cause that? Well, if I'm not misstaken, there is a chance to overfill the forkleg(s) with to much iol. That would change the stiffness I would say.

Hi MD

No, the actual spring tension has changed ("pretension" / "Preload"). I did not need to change the dampening/rebound.
