SMT Subframe mystery

Post by Ewano » Fri Feb 09, 2018 10:40 am

Can anyone help with this mystery?
I bought a 2009 SMT a year ago..love it...after buying it I realised the back end was bent, not badly but the rear fender was off a bit..
I've ridden around on it for a year but thought I'd sort it out. On investigation the subframe's been broken and welded at some point and isn't straight.
I've bought a used subframe from ebay and it seems to be the right thing except it has no threaded hole just in front of the rear rack mount. The top of this hole secures the rear trim piece and more importantly the bottom of this hole secures the rear end of the underseat/battery tray. As far as I can see all model SMTs secure the battery tray in the same way so why does the subframe have no mount point? (I've seen another one on ebay which also seems to be missing the mount point)
Is it because I have a 2009 undertray and a 2012 subframe - and if so how does the 2012 undertray fit to the subframe?
Pics below - any advice/help would be gratefully received - thanks in advance

Broken subframes on early SMTs were fairly common, usually caused by heavy top boxes. KTM fixed the problem (from 2011 on I think) with a redesigned rear end. From your experience it seems clear that the redesign was not just the subframe itself but other parts also.

I think I've answered my own question
It looks like on the 2011 on models the battery tray doesn't bolt to the subframe but screws to the rear fender trim panel above - clamping the plastic parts around the frame rather than tapping into it. I presume the tapped hole caused a weak point.
So the rear trim panel and battery tray are different as well as the subframe.
