Squeaky back brake? Hard to control at 30mph/40kph?

Headlight bulb keeps burning out?

Post by mjskier » Fri Oct 20, 2017 5:35 pm

Anybody else having issue with the headlight bulb burning out?

I'm not sure when it started, but lately I burn out the headlight pretty much every week.
It doesn't happen right away, and it is just the headlight. So maybe more of a mechanical issue (vibrations) than an electrical one?

Today the high beam blue light was on when I started the bike, and it stays on whether the switch is in the on or off position. And the headlight doesn't work in either position.

Anyway, just curious if somebody else has run into this issue before I bring out the voltmeter and start investigating.

My last headlight bulb blowing was vibration because I found a loose screw in the inner fairing. As well as checking for that, may be worth measuring the voltage across the battery with the engine running, shouldn't go above 14.5V, even if you rev to 5000 rpm otherwise your regulator has gone.

The plastic connector showed signs of overheating. When I pulled it off, one of the bulb connecting blade was stuck in it. The high beam indicator was also on. At this point I'm thinking maybe a short in the bulb itself?

I haven't measured the voltage across the battery yet. But if it was too high, wouldn't other bulbs also fail?

Correct me if I'm wrong but blown bulbs are also a sign of a faulty rectifier? Obviously not the case if it's just an isolated incident but if it happens again then it could well be. I had several blown bulbs in the past (990SM) and a new rectifier solved this.

Good luck.
