Fork seal leaking at 2700 miles WTF

Postby todd » Mon Aug 07, 2017 5:05 am

Has anyone had a problem with a fork seal leak on the SDR? The dealer told me it was not covered under warranty, it's brand new! They said it was normal wear and tear, the bike has 2700 miles on it! WTF

I guess KTM aren't going to discount the possibility that the rider could have been hopping gutters or landing some really hard wheelies to cause said issue. Still, I don't think there are that many bad riders out there to necessitate such a strict policy.

You would think they would cover it out of good faith, you know, to improve their depreciating company image. :?

Did you try something like trying a "seal mate"? Or the edge of credit card, or your license?
Sometimes a small particle of debris can get lodged in there, and if you catch it early, and dislodge it before it eats/tears into the seal, you wouldn't have to disassemble the fork(s) and replace seals.

I tried a seal cleaner but all it did was reveal that the dust seal was the only thing holding the oil from just pouring out. I dropped it off at the suspension shop Wednesday and picked it up Friday with all new suspension front and rear. Now it has the best suspension you can get.

You're in Georgia?
Very nice, just a wee jealous.
Congratulations.

I would share your concerns with KTM, not the dealer. Even if it is just through the main website. The factory needs to know what is going on so they can make the best decision on how to handle things. They might/probably blow you off, but if they are looking to improve the owner experience you may be a catalyst to good change.

I talked to KTM north America and they told me that it was not a warranty item.
