Post by Stokies1290 » Tue Apr 03, 2018 9:22 pm

Back in 2015 I bought an sdr and had no end of issues so I backed the bike ...... but I'm strangely drawn back to an sdr again and I'm trying to find out if all the issue's are sorted or what issues they still have !!!!! now they have been out a few years .

Maybe a trip to ktm and a test drive could be the tip of the day

My ‘17 has the front rotor groan when pushing around in the garage. Dealer said is normal. The rear brake squeals sometimes coming to a stop.

I had the Brembo front brake master cylinder and fuel pump recalls done. Other than that...fantastic machine! Oh, and it needs a new rear tire at about 4,700 miles (down to wear bars in center) but it’s had great adhesion.

2016 SDR constant electrical problems and very poor backup, I'd give at least another year.

I've done 8500 miles on mine, no warranty work. Only issue I have is the quick shifter works well apart from 5th to 6th gear below 5500 rpm, where it misses a gear. Niggles I have, range estimator still miles out, mpg indicator 7mpg high, steering bearing only lasted 7500 miles and rear tyres only last 3000 miles.

Hi Stokie...... I was talking with my local KTM service technician on Saturday (on behalf of Mick Watson and one of the SDGT forum guys) - he owns a KTM too - but it was interesting listening to the details of 'faults' that he has resolved both at work in the KTM dealership workshop, and on line in his forum section.

He did say the early version SDR 1290 13/14-15 had some clutch oil jet issues (prone to blocking depending on oil used & change frequency) and small starter motor brushes...... the later model 1290R &GT have some revised parts - so the 2018/19 SDR should be well sorted now. Like all brands... they take a few years of on market abuse to find the weak spots.... ;) . He stressed that no bike can go 15,000kms on any oil - that interval has to be specified by manufacturers to gain emission accreditation - he tells owners to change at 7,500km..... bike oil gets mashed by gearboxes unlike car engines...... I've always halved the specified oil change intervals on my Jap bikes, and do the same with the Euro stuff ;)

Your ethanol fuel is a major issue...... KTM cannot control individual fuel stations adding higher than 10% ethanol and causing fuel filter damage and injector blockages..... he reckons we have crappy stale fuel here in Aus too...... so maybe we have to drop back in technology and performance due to shit fuel or go to E bikes

Sooo.... if the SDR bug is nibbling....... just be sure to have it serviced and updated (software etc) regularly and don't touch anything you are not qualified to fiddle with....... bloody techno electrickery eh?

Oh, and one thing the KTM guy said was - never press the starter button before the system check has finished - that can cause a heap of issues with software. Tyre wear/head bearing life/etc are all consumables and vary with how the bike is used or maintained.

Cheers mate....... I'm totally happy with my 2017 SDGT and my local KTM dealership is top notch :D

Ps My BMW mates have had trouble with their 2016 R1200RT's - they had to wait 6 weeks for new ECU controller modules after their screens stopped working...... something BMW has been very coy about recalling.......

Any glitches I should look for? I do that sometimes.

Cheers Spiff...... if buying new, you are sorted..... your biggest issue is not the bike, but who you are buying it from.

Gotta do your homework to be happy with whichever brand you buy..... they all have some issues at times.

Best wishes looking for that new machine 8-)

Ps as an example, one of my R1200RT mates has moved to Tasmania..... so he traded his 24k km old 16 R1200RT in for ...... (no, not the new "19 R1250RT shift cam" as you would expect).. another R1200RT of the same spec... because he doesn't trust BMW's engineering enough to buy the first of a new model.....even though he is the most one eyed BMW fanatic I know....... go figure.....

Naw, I've already got a bike. I am just concerned with bumping the starter while the display is still cycling.
