My super D is lying to me. :(

Post by Spiff » Thu Sep 14, 2017 1:06 pm

So, I haven't ridden nearly as much as I like, so I don't have a lot of "150 mile afternoon rides" to reference. What I do have have is my daily commute. I ride 5 miles of traffic lights to work. I can't deny I run up to 90ish regularly, and like playing with cars that are game, mostly after 3 am (kind of safe?).

Anyway, I trusted the bike, it says I'm getting 45 mpgs, whatever. Then I had to fill up at 100 or so miles. So I started paying attention. I am getting 24.5 mpg. Just a touch less then the bike is telling me.

Has anyone double checked mpgs with a calculator?

Mine usually shows about 38mpg. I don't really care though, so I have not checked it any other way. It uses however much it uses, not much I can do about it, so I don't pay attention.

mines close enough that I haven't worried about hand calculations.

I don't trust the bike, I usually track all my vehicles using Fuelly app. My 990R was averaging 26.1MPG where the 1290R is averaging at 32.8MPG. This is combined commuting and mostly mountain runs. Which is pretty impressive for the size of the engine 1290R has.

I wonder if they will ever address this in a firmware update? My bike was showing 45 mpg, and it got 25. That's more than just slightly off.

Are you sure about your hand calculations? I've never seen numbers that low.

I did 110 miles last Saturday. Dash said 40.1 mpg and I had 3 bars left. And that's with full akrapovic exhaust and remapping. Stock was around 44. Either your wringing the balls off this thing or running rich. What's your altitude? What's your cruise rpm? My friend got 55 on his '86 intruder 700. He's very happy to beat me at something.

Going to go for a ride tomorrow (hopefully), and see how it does on an afternoon run. I do ring the poop out of it when I can, and am doing stop light to stop light.

I ended up going for a ride the other day, and have come up with a theory. I don't think the computer does well computing short trips. The bike claimed 38 mpg on my ride, a mix of cruising and spirited riding. After 40ish miles of commuting on the same tank the actual numbers were 32 mpg, but the computer was claiming over 43 mpg. I don't think my 5 mile commute is enough for the computer to get accurate data.

On a side note, a turbo Porsche SUV and I were playing last night. I heard him spool up, and I just whacked the throttle (2nd/around 40ish). I pulled him pretty hard with the front end acting like a yo yo. I have yet to figure out how this bike makes power. Sometimes I expect an explosion, and the throttle doesn't feel connected. Other times I am coming out of a turn and it will hold a beautiful one foot wheelie. I am getting better acquainted over time, but my learning curve is not as steep as I expected.

Never answered you question, bike is bone stock and I am at 2000 feet. Around town I cruise around 5k, I like the ability to scoot without shifting if need be. At an indicated 50mph I would be in 3rd.

One more question. How is it riding with slower bikes? Do you get bored, or is it cool to cruise?

It takes awhile to get used to the power but the bike is a comfortable cruiser and much better on my back.
Enjoy
