2017 Front Brake Groan\Howl

Post by Fry » Fri Jun 16, 2017 12:31 am

While moving my 17 SDR around in my workshop I noticed a howl\groan from the front brake.

Got the bike up on stands and when slowly rotating the front tire it would seem the noise happens at a certain spot on the rotor(s).

I brake hard but I don't think I could warp a rotor (Set?) in under 700 miles?

I seem to recall reading about this issue with other model year SDR's?

Whats the fix?

Is this a warranty issue?

Thanks for any thoughts on this issue.

Mine do it also. But everything I've ever had with discs did it. You can go to Ktm and they will measure the run out and determine if it's out of spec for warranty replacement. I don't mind it and don't feel any pulsing while riding. Some have said it's a powder coat build up under one of the disc mounting points and was fixed by filling it flat.

Im running different rims.

I dont feel it in the bars yet.

Its going in for the 600 mile service so ill have them measure the disc run out ans see if thats the issue.

The front rotors on my 2016 warped during the first 600, and were replaced under warranty, including a new set of pads.
It manifested the fault with pulsing rather than a noise when pushing it about, though.

I think mine was in the pads not retracting since I could tap the front lever and it would not do it rolling it in and around my garage. It never had any pulsing while riding and using the brakes so I never took it in for a warranty check. It has quit doing it with a few more miles on the brakes now. Mine is a 2015 so KTM has done zero in regards imho on this then. I know my Kawasaki Concours 14 and my Harley Ultra has never done this and the KTM only bike I have ever owned that did this. But I love this bike!

I had Brembo brakes on my last bike (don't laugh......Aprilia Caponord 1200TP ;) ) and they also groaned at low speed. Brembo pads just do that, so maybe a change to another brand/softer compound/bleed some air from the system might cure the groan.

Ps I sold that bike......not because of the brakes,.......I rode a 1290Gt and just had to have one! :D
