bike spitting coolant

Post by mrossk » Tue Nov 01, 2016 6:13 pm

Hey y'all, I'm looking for advice. I had the issue of the empty coolant reservoir, dealer filled it back up. Recently, the reservoir is empty again, and the bike is spitting out coolant via the overflow hose (on the back left top of the radiator). happens intermittently, and a fair bit of coolant comes out. The temperature gauge never reads too high, but it's obviously a problem. I've booked an appointment with the dealer- I have a few months left on the warranty, but I don't have much faith in them. Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks,
Michael

Bad radiator cap possibly? I had a speed triple that did the same thing. It ran fine, had normal temp but when I'd shut it down it would piss all over. You could actually hear the coolant boiling into the overflow tank. New cap under warranty solved it.

worth looking at for sure- it'll spit at me both when running and after shutting it off. Radiator bulimia?

Are you sure it's not coming from the radiator itself and not the hose?

yeah, I can see it coming out of the over flow tube. I got it back from the dealer, who replaced a crush washer (?). Within a week it's back at it. I'll have to bring it back, and get them to take a look at the cap.

I can see why you don't have much faith in them! Dealers...sheesh. They're supposed to be the experts! If they don't wanna take the time to pressure test the cooling system the least they can do is spring for a measly radiator cap just to rule it out.Bad crush washers usually leak. My money is still on a weak radiator cap. Know any body you can swap caps with for a few days? It sounds like the cap isn't able to maintain proper pressure but there's still enough flow to keep things at normal temps.

Now that winter seems to be setting in I won't mind giving it back to the dealer. Give them another shot while I've still go some warranty. Gotta get the horn issue resolved as well. But yeah- dealers, sheesh.
