Is vibration above 7K rpm normal?

Post by Gary » Tue Mar 15, 2016 3:24 pm

Finished break in period. I had a chance to rev up the engine, and there's vibration above 7K rpm at the pegs, handlebars (not as much) and the bike in general. Not horrible, but I don't think I'd be able to ride at that RPM for more than say a minute or two. Not that need to. Just wanted to check if this indicates a problem, or if it's normal...

I tried again. It gets really bad over 8K rpms. Though I noticed that the vibrations appear to be restrained under load. Then again, having bike under load at 8K rpm does not appear to be legally possible on public roads.

It may be possible your throttle bodies need to be balanced. A number of folks (myself included) noticed they can be out from the factory, and that balancing them helps. That said, it's not as smooth as an I-4...

I tried going over 10K rpm today. Interestingly, some vibration starts around 7K rpms, increases until 8K rpm, and than stays level and even decreases a tad at around 9K rpms and beyond. Anybody has similar experience?

None of note, I'm usually focused on where I'm heading at that point, but nothing that is garnering my attention.

They can be a little rough at higher revs - watch the road / change up early and let the Torque take you to the horizon - my pervious ride BMW K1300 was mindblowingly quick and solid at high revs - above 6500 - 11000 - twilight zone stuff - the SD is a torque machine - two very different riding styles required - love the SD

Like wsmc99 posted, I chugg and vibrate at low rpm but 'in the power' 7-9k she is like riding on air (and the front is) flat spot in the chain? weight fall off tire? the motor smoothes out.
Enjoy

I think the vibes are inherent. There's not much to these bikes. It's an engine with a little bit of frame bolted to it. Mine is also smooth to about 8k, get angry vibes and the front tires get squirmy up to about 10k when I shift. I also get annoying bang back through the clutch handle when I shift that high.

This is definitely a street bike engineered by a dirt bike manufacturer.
