Speedo Over generous reading

Post by stagger » Sat Apr 26, 2014 7:05 am

This may have already been covered, do apologies if it is a double post.
I see I was not alone thinking the speedo is out by about 10%. I thought I was imagining it, but all the motorway traffic was to be going 10K over the limit (120km rather than 110) Given the overzealous Highway Robbers, it didn't make sense.

Talking to the dealer today, they have had this complaint once already for the 1290. It is easily fixed, I'm told. As part of the initial ECU set up they choose the wheel size and the 18" Adventurer is the default I think. Given we have a different profile and 17" that may account for the variation.

I will take mine back to dealer this week to get mine checked and see what it is set on. I will let you all know.

So I may not have not really done 3,500+ KM yet.

That person complaining to the dealer was me the day I picked my 1290 up & there is no fix at this stage. The Speedo is Out Big time, one thing I hate when I am sitting at 110kph on the highway & the Speedo reads 125kph.

I have even tried to wire in a Speedo Healer & a SpeedoDRD into the front ABS wiring to correct it but it keep showing a MTC fault with either system wired in, I am still working on a solution.

Thanks Kev, that makes sense.
I will keep going with his offer re that setting - UNLESS you have already had them check/change the wheel size setting. Please let me know, as I would rather not muck around.

This is a definite warranty issue and if it all bikes sold in Australia, I suspect KTM Australia legal issue with the Transport Authorities. Speedo accuracy will be covered ADR (Australian Design Rules). It will have an impact on our resale values as the bikes will show 10% higher kms. The same will go for other countries.

Yes, I've have complained to the dealer about mine as well and was told that slightly over a 10% Reading was deemed to be acceptable by Ktm, although he was going to email them with my Vin No. and see what comes back. Not overly happy about it as it's not Ktm that will loose money on their bike. So by the time my bikes travelled 20000k it will show at least 22000k.
I hope Kev works out a solution because it doesn't seem like they are going up do any thing about it

I just checked ADR full legislation, KTM are off the hook if it is 100 = 118. At 100 = 125 they have a problem and are in breach of a UN endorsed convention. That covers us here in Oz as well as Europe. Not sure about anywhere else.

The rules for motorcycles since 2006 in Australia.
Speedo reading plus10%, plus another 8km. So 100 is allowed to be 118 before it is deemed non compliant. As long as it is over not UNDER measuring, over is OK.

Only the Speedo over reads the mileometer is correct according to my GPS. The dealer went through my wheel size reset the dash & so on, hopefully KTM will come out with an update to correct the speedo reading, easily done with a software update if they could be asked, I will carry on trying to find a way to calibrate the Speedo.

Yesterday, there was +2km difference after 270kms fuel stops between my mates 2012 Z1000 & my 1290. I can't for the life of me work out how I had covered 2kms more when my front wheel was clearly in the air more than the Z1000'S :D

Nice. I can confirm how much time Kev spends on his back wheel. I only wish I had the balls to give it a go.

Based on my phones GPS, the mileometer is not as bad as the speedo at a 4.85% variation on my 108 Km test today. That doesn't seem too bad and was not using a certified measuring instrument.

KTM must be able to issue a new speedo algorithm can fix this? We might need to apply some group pressure. There are ways to get their attention.

I saw a great wheelie today on a Gixxer, already doing 70/hr km (or about 60 KTM Kms/hr) and he gave it one. He had the tidiest tail. No number plate bracket, number plate or even indicators. Police were very abundant today, so not a smart time to be attracting attention.

I checked today on the recent resetting of my wheel diameter. The speedo is reading 108 went "actual" GPS measured is 100. So that is within the limits of +10% and then +8km
So that will be as good as it gets I am afraid.

I have noticed my speedo takes a while to react when i decelerate, example if i am @ 70kmh, back off the throttle entirely i can feel the engine breaking and the bike slowing down quite rapidly but the speedo won't drop for maybe 2 seconds, then take a big leap down.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

I can attest that my 14 US model is running approx 20% fast/high. In mph
I was riding an indicate 75 mph and cars were flying by me in a 60 zone.

Even the little old ladies in the right (left to you AUS) lane were passing
Me right and left.

I don't really care as I'm a chronic speeder anyway and rarely look at the speedo.

Still in this age of electronics you'd think it not only wouldn't happen but it should
be easily rememded if it was way off.

Two things I hate about the bike, the indicator switch in quick lane changes in traffic & the Speedo.

I went past a stationary speed indicator yesterday and it said I was going 31 mph speedo showed 34 so 10% it is. still we pay for our tickets here $$$ per every mile over,$250 covers the first 10 mph over then it's $10. for each mile over that til +30 where they tow and cuff. on the bright side ktm is just trying to keep us out of jail.
Enjoy
