What quality conrol?

Post by fastgreyoldguy » Sun Jun 02, 2019 4:16 am

I knew when I purchased My SD 2017 that it was going to be exotic. wonderful design, power, charisma and and iffy quality. I am yet again on a loaner bike, for who knows how long.
The dealer has been good, KTM Canada are asshats. Ktm corporate is meh.
The list
Would not run out of the crate- 3 weeks to determine and correct faulty headlight.
No fork oil in right leg on delivery
Handle bars hit the tank and chipped the paint
Installed Akro system Found 4 of the eight motor mount bolts cross threaded(helicoiled them)
Crushed oil filter discovered at first oil change
Multiple missing fasteners.
Monthly software failures MTC\no start\functions disappearing\oil temperature steady at 138c\stranded regularly
quick shifter disappeared, in the shop bike currently thinks its an 1090 Adventure
Rad had a pinhole leak New rad was shipped with the top mounting tabs hammered flat to fit in the damn box cracked when trying to straighten The whole rad episode took 7 weeks out of my season.
The guys at the dealer have taken to calling the bike black Friday because it was obviously put together after a liquid lunch on a Friday
I wasn't expecting Honda reliability buy this is like a hyosung crossed with an enfield
Its hard to stay in business when your reputation is this bad.

Sorry you've had so many issues with your bike. My 2015 SDR has been stone reliable since the day I bought it with 3 miles on the clock.

Fastgreyoldguy. My experience is similar to Xtremewlr, knock on wood here. I have only had two issues and neither were major at all. The rear taillight mounting tab broke so I installed the led blaster programmable one at my cost and I had the high beam toggle switch replaced under warranty which both seems to have been common on 15's. Tires oil and fuel plus brake pads is my only expenses other than the boatload of mods but it has been good to me for my 4 years with my 2015 I bought new and it has been one of my favorite rides in my 45 years of being a license rider.

Sooooo..now the oil temp. shows __ the slowly rises when driving to 20c.. in 30c weather
I develops a general failure warning every time its ridden from cold, somewhere around the end of my street. It doesn't set a code. If you go to track mode or ride for an hour the idiot lights will go out.
Oh and second rad failed, same way, smartly had first rad welded and swapped them out. Sent second rad out to be welded.

Ya got the citrus, the one-in-a-thousand. Yeah, I've had a couple of minor niggles but out of the eleven in the last few years and the five in the garage this is THE keeper. A '14 well massaged. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

 That story sounds really bad...... I have a 17 SDGT and it has been brilliant - I'd recommend KTM to anyone based on my experience here in Aus...... mine had proper pre-delivery and has had all it's regular services. I change my own oil inbetween the KTM spec and I can see how the filter could be crushed - it needs to be inserted properly before the cover is screwed on tight...... but this is basic mechanical skill/ duty of care stuff and is not difficult! So it's negligence!

The cross threaded engine mounts are a "first" for me.... it should have been taken back by the dealer/KTM importer as a lemon. Something went seriously wrong on the KTM assembly line for that unit, and there might have been a batch that got through before the worker/tool/robot was identified as being in error.

It reads like the majority of US/Canadian dealers just don't have the training or back up from the importer to sort out any issues.

You should not have had to endure all this drama..... it should have been sorted or replaced in the first month or earlier...... you've had very bad service from your KTM dealership - they don't seem to know how to even load software properly let alone determine when a bike is not fit for sale.

I'd be spewing with rage if it were mine...... but be assured they are not all this troublesome - mine is every bit as reliable and as high quality as my 2005 CBR1100XX, and that's high praise! Nothing 'iffy' about the quality.

When did you buy the 2017? Is it still covered by warranty? The handle bars are put onto the bike by the dealer as they uncrate the unit (or maybe the importer does that over your way?) so it's very poor final assembly workmanship along with a factory assembly line screwup.... A truly awful experience to go through :(

I understood that was due to engine being revved too hard when cold, while the oil was too thick and crushing the early filter (61338015100) without pressure relief valve. And hasn't been an issue with the updated filter 61338015200?

Cheers Joe,

You're likely more correct than me..... must have been why the p/no changed ;) ......although, as I understand it, the viscosity of 10w50 or 15w50 when cold is only 10w or 15w. It thickens up to 50w as the polymers heat up. Anyway, KTM made a change so they must have put their engineers eyes onto the issue. Pity they hadn't used a spin-on cartridge filter system on the 1290..... (probably not enough space available).

PS - I can't comment on what my oil filter looked like at the 1000km 1st service (that was done behind closed doors at the dealership so it could have collapsed and I wouldn't know ;) )...... but I have done many more oil & filter changes than my dealership since then and can report that from Feb2017 all filters supplied by the KTM shop have not had any deformities in use - I still ensure they 'slip' onto the internal tube before screwing the cover back on and, while I don't idle the engine for long before departing from home, I never use full rpms from cold (suburban traffic/radars/lights/school xings don't let me do anything silly ) .

Hope you're not too 'locked down' over your side of the ditch :)

man at some point it should fall under the lemon law i would think ? I got my 2017 SDR new also it had a lot of shipping damage to it when i received it, the shop ordered new parts (4 turn signals, muffler, bottom triple clamp, start button housing, handlebars) but lost them somewhere in there shitty little mismanaged shop,9 mounts later they found them, but buy then i was sick of them jacking me around so i told them to stick the parts up there ass, i found a better dealer in Redding Ca. to deal with, they did my 2 recalls (brake piston & fuel pump) and i haven't had one issue so far in 8000 miles of use,it has been the most fun bike i have ever had.
