New 18 SDR Owner

Post by jgiachino » Sat May 26, 2018 1:11 pm

His guys, just bought an 18 1290 SDR, I've been wanting one for a while....had a 990smt ii let go 2 years ago and currently have a GS, 300xc, 350xc - so good to have a KTM street bike back in the garage! Bike is stock with perf and track package installed. Haven't actually ridden it because when they put the track pack on last night it through a service code/light and I just didn't want to ride it brand new until they got that resolved - kind of sucked, hopefully get it all good today!

Any event, I just wanted a fun bike that was orange, not going to track it, just commute 10 miles and hit the twisties (rocky mountains just 5 miles away)!

Opinions on accessories appreciated:

Ordered: Yosh Fender Eliminator, KTM heated Grips, SAE Pig Tail, KTM tank protector stickers, scottt oiler

Want: (and yes, I'll search here shortly but sometimes good to ask as well)
--Akra Slip on - my 990smt had 2 and sounded fantastic - not sure same sound on 1290?
--Mirrors? Are the stock mirrors good? they sucked on 990, just want functional, prefer stock ones stay
--Electrical up front near dash - what's cleanest way and where to mount? basically for Garmin Montana GPS
--Anyone put Clearwater Darlas (fork mount) on one of these? Have on GS and they make nights riding and visibility top notch - but want a pic too see how they look / feedback on install?
--Need to carry laptop to work, have KTM backpack but any tail bag that anyone uses that will work? Hate to put a bag on it but backpacks suck (and gs luggage kind of ruined me on backpack)
--Anyone swap pegs for anything with a bit more grip in wet - eg some rubber on them?
--Remove Passenger footpegs - anyone remove and just keep exhaust side without footpeg - pic?

Thoughts appreciated, happy to join the club!

Bike is awesome

Q: any issue with using battery Tendor on SDR? manual says remove if dont use KTM Brand?? I like to put on a pigtail so it's easy?

Mirrors are fine for what I need!

Pegs are fine

I have a Garmin Montana I use on my dirt bike (even KTM colors) - bar clamp ram ball and it fits perfect under Dash! saved some $ on nav!

No clue on exhaust - had a full Akra, SAS Removal, Intake,...on my 990 so i know I'll go there at some point but just wanted a can on the new one for now - but doesn't appear worth the $'s so will stay stock for first 2k mi or so

Added
USB to front ACC2/switched power
R&G Exhaust hangar / removed foot pegs
KTM Tank Protector/grip pads
SAE Piig tail
Yosh Tail Tidy

Next - when they show up:
Scott oiler
Rotty Stage 2 canister / SAS removal
Rottty Fueling dongles for o2 elimination
TFT Screen Protector

Dealer at frist service:
First Service
Check front brakes - rubbing/noise at parking lot speeds
Install/enable My ride so phone/audio works
Heated Grips Enable/Install
Update TFT Software
Question on driveline slack when on / off throttle - is this normal? Cant remember my 990 diidi it or not...my GS is shaft drive so it definitely doesn't do it.

300 miles - break in I'm trying not to lug it, vary rpm, mostly stay below 6500rpm but occasionally get it up to 7500, pretty easy on the throttle...tomorrow I'm going to do 100mi and not look at tach and just drive its as it feels natural/as I would after break in....as I've seen a few others say - it hit's a rough spot at 6500, almost feels like a limiter/definitely a change in feel.

This bike does ok at low rpm's in the first 3 gears but try and keep it above 4k in 4-6th that will also help with the lash of which you speak. I've broke in 2 1290 SDR's now and only having 3-6500 rpm's to play in gets boring really quick, besides I read motoman's break in page and it made sense so I thrashed mine a bit doing lots of engine braking.
Enjoy
