So I appreciate all the feedback. I honestly wasn't expecting so many to reply.

As to TexasSuperDuke I started on a 1986 Yamaha Fazer (the little Vmax) and wanted one ever since. Haven't had the opportunity to ride one, but with their impending discontinuation and the GF's heavy aversion to anything cruiser-esque I don't want to head that way.

As to what I am heavily considering, I did get to test ride a 17' Aprilia Tuono 1100 (non factory) yesterday. Which I'll be quite honest, blew me away. Now I had a 16' SDR so I didn't get to experience the quickshifter or some of the fancier updates KTM has on the '17 bike, but for both bikes being in the same class they are on different planets when it comes to approaches.

Time will tell but I'm having a really hard time justifying even looking at a new SDR for an additional 4k.

If I do get something else I'd be happy to write up an extended review of both.

Littleton eh? My sister lives in Littleton. Not having four wheels might be a hindrance for two wheeled travel, for a few days on the front range. I have a friend who Ice Races up in Manitoba. They do that in Georgetown too! I doubt the ice tires are legal on the street though and probably wouldn't last long anyway. :D

Anyway, the real question is what type of riding do you want to do. You mention a girl friend. Neither the SDR/GT nor the Touno are great two up machines. So as a second machine do you want a bike for two up riding with the GF? Or, there are some great dirt roads west of you, do you want a dual sport? Or, a little further and there are some great single tracks, so do you want a plated dirt bike? None of these types of riding really overlap. It's all a matter of what type of riding you want to do as to what type of bike you should get as a second bike.

People tend to like to stay with what they know. It's a rut, try something else, branch out. If you can, find some friends to ride different kind of rides with. I have a group of friends who like to ride and race in dirt. Some other friends that like the high mountain passes of southwest Colorado, Utah and Arizona. And other friends, some on this site, that prefer only pavement. This necessitates different kinds of bikes. I haven't found the group yet that likes track days but the SDGT may be the right one for that. Then there is adventure touring which is my favorite, but you can't do that all the time. Or can you ... hmmmm?

Glad to hear you weren't hurt, it's a shame about the SD. It's just a motorcycle though, you can get up and do it again. Good luck with your choices.

I had two bikes, my other was DRZ 400 with a lot done, was a 470 in the end.
I had this with my Speed Triple.

Now I have a 1290 SDR, if I could have another bike, it would be either an Indian Scout / Scout bobber or a dirt / enduro/ trail bike.

Go ahead and buy the tuono, you know you want it, it stole the show this year in every shootout and I think the Italians have figured out how to get more than 20 mpg out of that motor! personally still reading to many problems over on that site tho they seem to get better every year.
Enjoy

I like the Tuono, but I must admit if I could find a deal on a Monster 1200R that may have been my second choice to the SDR. My second bike would still be a Husky FE501 or the KTM 500.

Said no one ever lol.

VMAX if you’re short - maybe

Tuono if you’re short(ish) - perhaps

Nothing compares to the 2017/18 SDR or is remotely more fun to ride. Maybe some kind of blown bagger, but that’d just be more frightening.

Lol, I like the 1200R. It isn't my first choice, but was in the top 3. Tuono Factory was the other. To be honest all my shopping was only done to reinforce my decision for the SDR. I went to a Yamaha dealer and told him I wanted the KTM, and to give me a deal on an FZ10 to talk me out of it. He said $500 off msrp plus tax. Thought about it for almost 10 seconds.
