Got Renazco seat for KTM 990 SMT!

Here she is, what a beaut!

And these photos show it compared to the KTM Ergo seat (which I hate).

I think it's absolutely beautiful, and it's way better than the wooden plank that is the KTM Ergo seat. James Renazco is truly an artist, right down to the stitching and the way he perfectly matched the side vinyl to the silver body panels on the SMT.

I haven't even done a test ride on it yet, but my first reaction to the way it feels is that I'd like it to be even thicker and more cushioned. Luckily, James said I can send it back for some adjustments if I want. It's hard to have a custom product made to fit you just right when you can't meet face-to-face with the person making it!

I'll post again with more impressions after I've done a test ride or two.

Looks great in the picture. How much higher is it than the stock seat?

I don't have the stock seat any more (it got turned into the Renazco), but I would guess it's about 20mm higher... and some of that gets compressed when you sit on it anway

Rode the bike a bit with the new seat.

First things first, it is much, MUCH better than the KTM Ergo seat I had been using. That thing felt like a wooden plank!

I can't accurately compare the Renazco to the stock (non-Ergo) seat now, because I used the stock seat to make the Renazco. But as I remember it, the Renazco is a lot more comfortable than the stocker, too. I think this is because James filled in most of the "scooped" section of the seat with extra foam, making it almost flat from front to back.

However (and this is just an early impression from a few short rides) I think I may need even MORE, and softer, padding. But that is because of my own back problems (partially herniated disc between L4 and L5 vertebrae), not because the seat is bad. It's a great seat, but I need something even softer and more cushioned than what would be perfect for a normal person.

I don't blame James for not putting even more padding in this time, because he was trying to keep the seat low enough for my 29" inseam to manage easily. But I realize now that it's more important for me to have a cushy seat than a low seat height. So it looks like another round of modifications are in store...

I'm just waiting for delivery of an SMR seat, which is higher by 20mm, but even less comfortable than the stock SMT seat. However, when I've got that, I'm intending to take the SMT seat to have 'Australian Cumfy Seats' build it up by 25mm in the scooped section, and then I will use this as a long distance option.

That's the Givi screen. It's not bad at smoothing the airflow, but I think it would be better if they made it even taller and angled more vertically. Maybe adding a Wunderlich universal spoiler would work?

JimmyDean

I just sent my seat off to Sargent to be rebuilt with their supercell atomic foam. I have one of their World Sport Seats on my Speed Triple and love it. I first tried having a local guy rework it  FAIL! wasted $200.

I'll let you know how it goes with Sargent. I should have it back in about 10 days.

I have a short inseam so found the stock seat a bit high for me. To correct that, having had Sargent seats on Ducatis and BMWs that were very good, I sent my SMT seat to Sargent who re-sculpted it with their atomic foam and re-covered the lowered seat with the original cover.
It's about 3/4" lower, which was the maximum they recommended without compromising comfort. While it may not sound like much difference, as it is, my revised seat actually makes a big difference. It's comfortable for a 500 mile day, I can get me feet easily on the ground at a full stop, and it looks perfectly stock.

^ that's good to here about the results you got. They should be working on my seat this week. If all goes well I should have it back next week.

I'm hoping it all turns out well considering I already had someone F*%# it up. But Dane seemed pretty confident that they could fix it right. Since he was so helpful I went ahead and requested they put one of their covers on it.. you know, spend a little extra money with them for helping me out. Not sure if I've mentioned it hear before, but I've got a sargent on my Speed Triple and absolutely love it. So I'm looking forward to getting the seat back and giving it a go.

I went the cheaper Air Hawk route. Something I have been thinking of for a few years but never until recently got around to getting. Great ! really comfortable for really long rides and I can use it on my other motorcycles.
Highly recommended.

Bug, how do you find the air hawk? - I tried similar on my mates bike and couldn't get away with the lack of feedback through my backside from the bike - I felt like I was about to slide off all of the time.

I make do with the KTM Ergo seat and have to admit I love it - it's so good you don't even think about it, which is how I think a seat should be.
SMT - Quill Ti Evo2 cans, MWR air filter, modded airbox, re-mapped by X-bikes w/tuneboy.
KTM panniers, tail & tank bags, tall screen, h/grips, gel seat.
Matt black painted Skidmarx hugger & side panels w/white decals.

The Airhawk is best with minimal air in it. I firstly had to much and felt like i was about to slide off. I reduced the air and comfort improved. I have to agree there is some loss of feel but after a few rides I have adjusted to it and it is great especialy for the longer rides where it excels.
For shorter rides I would not bother, but rarely do less than 150 miles and usualy ride at least 2-300 miles every time I use the SMT.
I also have more than one motorcycle, so it gets used.

It always amazes me when I see the number of blokes who buy a bike, spend a fortune modifying the hell out of it to make it what they think they really want only to sell the bloody thing or trade it in at a massive loss!

I`m sure the stealers love them, but really, how much money do they have?

It took me quite a number of years to convince the missus it was reasonable to get a new bike, and mainly as I was using the bike as my main transport , not just a toy.

For the record, the standard seat is fine.
If you arent comfy, I`d suggest you look at how you are sitting on the bike.

Then again, easier to blame the seat than admit we all need a few lessons on riding positioning etc?...eh?!

On the note of spending money modifying the SMT to make it quicker/more powerful.......

having scared the living crap out of myself over the weekend riding the bike at 3 figure speeds on my favourite road through the Mourne Montains in Ireland, all I can say to those who think this bike is too slow is, you are either riding Gods, or bloody liars!

I have discovered the joys of padded bicycle shorts under my riding gear for longer ventures. Very comfy.

That's a bloody good idea, and far cheaper too!
